St. Jakob Church: History and Furnishings
St. Jakob Church is dedicated to the Apostle James the Greater and is the oldest church in the municipality. The present Baroque church of St. Jakob was built in 1773 and consecrated on 22 July 1778. The two dates distinguish the construction from the later consecration. Inside, rich Baroque vaulted frescoes define the space; the pulpit depicts a falling Satan and is a work by Johann Schnegg. The parish church underwent a comprehensive renovation in 2007 and 2008. Its dedication, construction period and furnishings offer visitors interested in cultural history various points of reference for understanding the church.
In the Tyrolean list of monuments published by the Federal Monuments Authority on 28 May 2024, the Catholic Parish Church of St. James the Greater is listed as protected by regulation. The Cemetery of St. Jakob at St. Jakober Dorfstraße 93, 6580 St. Anton am Arlberg (Sankt Jakob am Arlberg), is also listed there as protected by regulation. Both the church and the named cemetery are therefore specific points of reference for a cultural-historical perspective on the village.
The Way of St. James, a Mountain Hike and a Cross-Country Ski Trail
On the section of the Way of St. James from Pettneu in Tyrol to Klösterle am Arlberg in the Klostertal valley, a detour to St. Jakob Church is recommended. Trail conditions can vary seasonally. Take the time of year into account when planning and check conditions before setting out.
The mountain hike to Putzenalpe is moderately difficult, 10.8 km long and takes about four hours. On the return, the route follows Trail 28B to St. Jakob. The distance, difficulty level, approximate duration and named return route provide different points of reference for planning the hike; the time given should be understood as an estimate.
The circular Bergwerk Gand hiking trail takes about 1.5 hours and branches off the Way of St. James, Trail No. 14, after approximately 300 m. Compared with the Putzenalpe mountain hike, which takes about four hours, it is the shorter option. The Putzenalpe hike is also rated as moderately difficult. This lets you compare the two hikes based on the time you have available, while the difficulty rating is specifically given for the mountain hike to Putzenalpe.
The Ganderau cross-country ski trail starts east of the Hotel Tirolerhof or at the fire station in Sankt Jakob am Arlberg. These two starting points provide specific guidance; check the details before setting out. The trail thus complements the hiking routes with a separate starting point for your planning.
