Discover Kaunertal
Accommodation in Kaunertal
Kaunertal offers several distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: the Kaunertal Glacier Road, Kaunergrat Nature Park, Quellalpin and an adventure trail in Feichten. If you are looking for a hotel, choosing the focus of your outing may help you decide where to stay. Are you mainly interested in the route and its altitude, the climate and glacier, or a trail with a set starting point and return point? The destinations below give you specific ideas to consider.
Glacier Road and altitude
The Kaunertal Glacier Road is 26 kilometres long and winds deep into the upper Kaunertal valley, with 29 hairpin bends. It climbs a difference in altitude of 1,500 metres. Its length, bends and difference in altitude describe different features of the same route and give you different points of reference when planning your trip. The bends mark the changes in direction along the road.
At an altitude of 2,750 metres, the road is home to Austria’s highest Postbus stop. It is served year-round. Check the Postbus service status before travelling.
Natural landscape and Quellalpin
Kaunertal lies in the heart of Kaunergrat Nature Park. Within the nature park, the Ötztal Alps quiet zone in the Pitztal and Kaunertal area covers approximately 96.20 km². The Ötztal Alps quiet zone covers an area of approximately 96.20 km² within Kaunergrat Nature Park in the Pitztal and Kaunertal area.
At Quellalpin, the permanent exhibition “With All Our Might. Climate, Glaciers, Kaunertal” explores climate and glaciers, with the Gepatschferner glacier at its centre. Quellalpin also includes an indoor swimming pool and a rooftop sauna area with views of the surrounding mountains. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider the exhibition’s subject and the facilities mentioned at the centre as separate points of interest.
Adventure trail and Verpeil Gorge
The Kaunertal adventure trail starts and ends at Quellalpin in the village centre of Feichten. It passes through Verpeil Gorge to the Adlerblick and Bergwerksblick viewing platforms, then returns to the valley floor in Feichten via the Knappensteig trail. The named starting and return point, along with the sequence of stops, gives you a clear guide to the route.
You can experience Verpeil Gorge via trails, steps and a suspension bridge. As local access conditions may change seasonally, check them before your visit.
The two types of outing differ considerably when planning your trip: the Glacier Road is defined by its length, bends and difference in altitude, while the adventure trail is described by its route, stops and return path. This can help you decide whether to include the road route or the trail with its named stops in your plans.
