Discover Kappl: hotels, winter trails and the Alpine Museum
Accommodation in Kappl
Kappl offers a range of things to explore during your stay, from the Alpine Museum and historic chapels to winter trails, e-bike routes and activities around the Diasbahn. If you’re looking for a hotel in Kappl, the time of year you plan to visit can help you decide which of these to focus on. For seasonal activities, it’s worth checking opening dates and timetables before you plan your trip.
Alpine history and chapels in Kappl
The Alpe Dias Alpine Museum brings Alpine life in the Paznaun Valley and its development over recent decades and centuries to life at original locations. At the museum, you can learn how milk is processed and refined into butter and cheese; homemade cheese is also available to sample. The museum is open seasonally, so check opening dates before your visit.
The chapels also feature a range of art-historical details. The Kerkerkapelle in Kappl has three wooden figures by sculptor Johann Ladner, dating from 1760. The Ruhesteinkapelle is on the way to Dias; its crucifix is 110 centimetres tall. In Bild, the chapel has a richly painted Early Baroque altar dating from around 1680, which is of significant art-historical value. The Rotwegkapelle is in a forest.
The altar in the chapel in Wiese dates from the 18th century and is decorated with angels; it depicts the Apostles Peter and Paul. The chapel is also home to a large, artistically valuable and well-restored carved statue of the Virgin Mary. Kappl has around 90 traditional settlements with a village character, where old customs are still practised.
Compare hiking trails and winter tours
Kappl’s hiking landscape features rushing streams, blooming meadows and far-reaching views. For winter hikers, the Sesslad trail starts at the Diasbahn mountain station and ends at the Untere Sessladalpe. It is 4.66 kilometres long and takes about 1.5 hours to walk. The Dias snowshoe hike also starts and ends at the mountain station, but follows a circular route: it is 1.8 kilometres long and takes one hour. The two tours therefore differ in their route, length and time required.
For a longer outing, there’s the “Weisse Weiten” winter long-distance hiking trail. The first stage covers 15.9 kilometres from See, via the hamlet of Oberhaus, to the Kappl ski area. Guided winter and snowshoe hikes with experienced local guides are also available in Kappl; snowshoes can be rented locally.
The Escape Trail Kappl can also be assessed using specific route details: it is 2.6 kilometres long, with 166 metres of ascent and 100 metres of descent. Which route suits your stay depends, among other things, on whether you’re considering a short snowshoe loop, a hike with a stated walking time or a longer winter stage.
Activities around the Diasbahn and on two wheels
The Sunny Mountain Adventure Park in Kappl covers 80,000 square metres at an altitude of more than 1,800 metres. At the Diasbahn mountain station, the park offers disc golf, a low ropes course and a petting zoo. The Diasbahn goes up to an altitude of 1,830 metres and operates seasonally. Be sure to check the adventure park’s seasonal opening times before your trip, too.
Kappl offers a varied network of e-bike routes, from gentle Alpine trails and scenic panoramic routes to leisurely valley trails. A flow trail runs for 3.7 kilometres from the Diasbahn mountain station to the historic Egger Chapel. Check the current trail status before setting out.
