The Leoben City Theatre is Austria’s oldest civic theatre. Anyone interested in the city’s history will also find impressive points of connection elsewhere: from the main square and its historic buildings to a monastery in Göss, considered the oldest in Styria. There are also museums, experiences centred on traditional brewing, and ways to explore Leoben on foot, by bike or in winter.

Theatre History, Art and Brewing Traditions

The city’s theatre history is tied to a specific place: from 1790, rooms in the “Hofstätterisches Haus” at Homanngasse 5 were adapted for use as a theatre. Another historic connection is the Eggenwald Garden House, associated with the peace negotiations between France and Austria in 1797.

In the district of Göss, the monastery is considered the oldest in Styria. Its special features include architectural and artistic treasures, as well as an early Romanesque crypt. The Gösseum offers a different way to discover local traditions, with a modern, interactive introduction to traditional brewing.

The MuseumsCenter in the KulturQuartier presents the history of Leoben and the region under the motto “7 Tracks into the Past.” The gallery in the Kunsthalle Leoben focuses on contemporary Austrian art. The Young Museum, meanwhile, offers a programme for children and schools. Its cultural themes thus range from regional history and art to activities expressly aimed at younger visitors.

Old Town and Historic Buildings

The main square has been the heart of the city since the 13th century. A walk through the old town takes you past numerous secular and religious buildings. One landmark is the Schwammerlturm, Leoben’s last surviving medieval city gate. The parish church was once a Jesuit church; its early Baroque design and richly appointed interior with a high altar define its architectural character.

The Maßenburg also brings together history and views over the city: its first fortifications date back to the 9th or 10th century, and the observation tower offers a panoramic view of Leoben. An area at the Glacis has been landscaped as a park. A building on the southwest side of the main square, richly decorated with stucco, has the city’s most significant Baroque façade. The former mendicant church and monastery date back to 1260 and have been incorporated into the LCS shopping centre.

Exploring on Foot, by Bike and Outdoors

Leoben has around 35 kilometres of marked routes for running and walking. Cyclists can choose from several routes, too: the Mur Cycle Path R2 runs for around eight kilometres through Leoben. The Iron Road Cycle Path R38 leads from Leoben via Trofaiach to Hieflau; the section to Vordernberg is 17 kilometres long.

At Häuselberg, experienced climbers can climb the Lesner Wall throughout the year when weather conditions are suitable. Stand-up paddleboarding and rafting on the Mur are offered from the LE Bootshaus. For a winter sports outing, Schladnitzgraben has a five-kilometre, family-friendly cross-country ski trail that is also suitable for beginners.

A 1,400-square-metre facility lies directly on the Leoben–Hinterberg cycle route. It includes a 37-metre-long kids’ track and a 119-metre-long course with rollers and banked turns. Together with the running and walking routes, cycle paths and activities on the Mur, it offers a range of ways to enjoy Leoben actively.

Church Fairs and Local Traditions

The Oberlandler z’Loibn church fair takes place at Massenburg in Leoben. Traditional Styrian dishes, selected wines and Gösser beer are available; the offerings may vary from one edition to another. The Gösser Kirtag is a traditional annual event in Leoben. Its defining features include a long street lined with market stalls, music, regional cuisine and local traditions. If you would like to plan your trip around a specific event date, check the dates in advance.

Leoben offers a range of options for planning your trip: theatre and city history, art and brewing traditions sit alongside outdoor routes and activities. Which ones appeal most depends on whether you would rather spend your time sightseeing, enjoying culture or being active.
