Radmer combines the mountain landscape of the Radmer Valley with a long mining history, Baroque church art and a variety of tour options. When planning your trip, you can choose between the copper mine show, historic buildings and trails in the mountains.

Landscape and location

The Radmer Valley lies between the Eisenerzer Alps and the Gesäuse mountains and encompasses mountains, alpine pastures, forests and streams. Radmer an der Stube is about 7 kilometres off the Eisenbundesstraße B115, between Eisenerz and Hieflau. This information gives you an initial idea of the landscape and the town’s location.

Copper mining in the Radmer Valley

At the Radmer copper mine show, the history of copper mining in the Radmer Valley dates back about 3,000 years. Starting in 1996, volunteers restored the so-called Paradeisstollen, together with its associated tunnels, shafts and workings, and opened it to the public. The two dates refer to different aspects: the roughly 3,000 years relate to copper mining in the valley, while restoration of the tunnel system began in 1996.

The underground visit begins aboard Austria’s smallest mine train, which the description calls unique in the world. If you are planning a visit, check the mine’s current visitor arrangements in advance.

Church and protected buildings

The Baroque pilgrimage church of Saint Anthony of Padua in Radmer an der Stube was built in 1602 by Emperor Ferdinand II. Inside, the ceiling is richly decorated with stucco; there are also frescoes by an unknown artist. Church tours can be arranged by telephone. Arrange a time in advance if you would like to discover the church on a guided tour.

The former manor house, known as the Großhaus, at Radmer an der Stube 19 is also protected as a historic monument by official order. The Way of the Cross, with its chapels and war memorial, at Radmer an der Stube 9 is likewise protected. These two sites complement a visit to the church with further specific examples of protected buildings in Radmer an der Stube.

Circular walks and mountain tours

The Habsburg Mile is a family-friendly circular route through Radmer that combines history, culture and nature. Several stops explore the high valley’s close connection with the House of Habsburg. With its themed stops, it differs from tours that focus on summits or technical sections.

Böse Mauer in Radmer is an impressive panoramic summit in the Eisenerzer Alps, with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains of the Hochschwab and Gesäuse regions. Check current mountain conditions before setting out on a hike.

Lugauer is a rugged mountain also known by the nickname “Styrian Matterhorn.” The “Lugauer 2217” traverse starts in Radmer an der Stube and crosses the northeast face to the eastern summit. Some exposed climbing sections on the connecting ridge are secured with fixed ropes. This makes it different in focus from Böse Mauer: the traverse includes exposed climbing sections, while Böse Mauer is described as a panoramic summit.

Mountain biking towards Radmerhals

A typical mountain bike route climbs around 800 metres in elevation on a challenging ascent to Radmerhals. It passes through Radmer village and then branches off towards Finstergraben and Radmerhals. After the turn-off, the route follows a forest road for about 8 kilometres, with steep, challenging climbs, up to a high point at around 1,300 metres. Check current route conditions before setting out.
