If you choose Leoben as a travel destination, you can focus your stay on the city’s history, outdoor activities or seasonal leisure options. Specific highlights include an old-town walk that can be explored on foot, named cycling routes and a range of cultural venues.

Old Town, Architectural History and Museums

The old-town walk lets you explore Leoben’s sights on foot. One notable historical connection dates back to 1797: the historic treaty was signed in the Eggenwald Garden House following peace negotiations between France and Austria. This links a specific place in Leoben with an important period in the city’s history.

The parish church of St. Xaver also offers a clear architectural contrast: it was built between 1660 and 1665, its façade is in the Renaissance style, and its interior is in the so-called Jesuit Baroque style. At the MuseumsCenter Leoben, you can learn about more than 1,100 years of city history. The Kunsthalle Leoben presents changing exhibitions of contemporary Austrian art, so the exhibition program varies. Both institutions are housed in the KulturQuartier Leoben, as is the city library.

The Schwammerlturm is the only surviving medieval city gate in Leoben and is also the city’s landmark. From the café at the top of the tower, you can enjoy views over Leoben and the surrounding area. If you plan to visit the café, check current visiting arrangements beforehand.

Göss Abbey is the oldest monastery in Styria. Beneath the church choir is an early Romanesque crypt. Group tours are available year-round by telephone appointment; in summer, tours of the roof structure may also be offered. For another historical site, walk from Jakobikirche along Dirnböckweg and Massenbergstraße; in just a few minutes, you will pass through the historic gatehouse into the courtyard of the Massenburg ruins.

Walks, Hikes and Cycling Routes

Leoben has around 35 kilometers of marked running and walking trails. There are hiking tours of varying difficulty in and around Leoben, including leisurely routes over Kalvarienberg and the more challenging hike up Mugel. These examples differ both in character and in the level of difficulty mentioned. For a specific tour, it is worth checking the current trail markings and conditions.

There are also two different reference points for cycling tours. The Mur Cycle Route R2 runs for around eight kilometers through Leoben; the Iron Road Cycle Route R38 leads from Leoben via Trofaiach to Hieflau. An approximate distance is given for the R2 route through Leoben, while the R38 is described by the sequence of towns along the way.

Seasonal Activities and Reasons to Visit

During the winter season, you can play ice hockey, go ice skating and play Bavarian curling at the Leoben Ice Rink. The winter season generally runs from autumn until mid-March. Ice skating, like the other two sports, is therefore available only during a seasonal period.

Asia Spa Leoben offers day and monthly tickets for visits to the day spa. The water park includes a slide tower and a climbing wall. If you are planning a visit, check the current ticket conditions in advance.

A tour of the Gösseum ends with freshly tapped Gösser beer and a beer pretzel. As visit details may change, check the current tour arrangements beforehand. Alongside historical walks and outdoor trails, Leoben offers seasonal activities and guided visits as different options for your stay.
