Discover Kammern Im Liesingtal
Accommodation in Kammern Im Liesingtal
Kammern Im Liesingtal combines agricultural history and sacred art with historic buildings, cycling routes and hiking trails. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, these themes can shape your travel plans: you can focus on cultural history or choose one of the various trails.
Agriculture, Church Art and Architectural History
The Museumshof Kammern documents around 200 years of agricultural history. The parish church of St. John the Baptist houses a Gothic statue of the Virgin Mary in the style of the “Beautiful Madonna,” dating from 1420. The church also preserves a bell from 1536, made in Jörg Perger’s workshop. The church and its adjoining cemetery are protected as historic monuments by decree.
Historic buildings also make their own distinctive contribution: Umadum motte is protected as a historic monument by official order. The present-day ruins of Kammerstein Castle date from the second half of the 13th century. The ruins of Ehrenfels Castle lie at an elevation of about 1,150 metres above sea level, above the Gföhler Wand near Kammern, and are among the highest fortifications in Styria, at 1,146 metres above sea level.
Sacred Sites and Access
Seiz Ulrichskirche stands on a hill north of the village of Seiz, within the market municipality of Kammern Im Liesingtal. The oldest surviving part of the church is the present-day sacristy. Its uncovered frescoes depict the art and faith of people around the year 1000. Important for your visit: the interior is closed for almost the entire year; access is available on special occasions. Visitors may enter the covered exterior walkway. Check locally in advance whether a visit is possible.
Cycling and Hiking Trails by Theme and Length
The Marterlweg in Kammern includes 48 roadside shrines, chapels and wayside shrines. It offers four independent routes ranging from 11.6 to 16.3 kilometres in length; the total distance is 52.1 kilometres. The distances for each route help you compare the length of one route with the entire trail network. The Rastland cycle route R15 is another option: it passes through Kammern and is suitable for leisurely as well as sporty cycling tours through the region.
Several long-distance hiking trails also pass through Kammern. One stage of the Mariazell Founders’ Trail runs through the village, as does one stage of the Styrian Iron Trail. The Rittersteig, by contrast, runs between Kammern and Mautern. It is marked in yellow and white, has its own signposting system, and features several information boards around the ruins of Kammerstein Castle.
The Rittersteig can be combined with a train journey, as both Kammern and Mautern have a railway station. Check current rail services separately. To detour from the nearby ruins of Kammerstein Castle to the ruins of Ehrenfels Castle, a narrow, steep path leads uphill; the walk takes just under half an hour. As trail conditions can vary, check the state of the path before setting out.
High-Altitude Destinations and Nature
The hiking route to Steineck reaches the 1,297-metre summit. At the top there is a summit cross and a bench. This makes the tour different from trails whose descriptions mainly highlight distances or historic stops. Nature lovers will find intact flora and fauna around Blumenberg Reiting near Kammern.
