For a stay in Gföll, the named hiking destinations and local cultural history offer concrete points of interest. The trails differ in their routes and destinations: they lead, for example, to the Gföller Mahder meadows, the Wildschütz inn or through the raised bog. Cycling, cross-country skiing and the history of the Gföller Musi are also topics you can use to guide your travel planning.

Hiking trails and their destinations

The “Gföller Mahder 1” hiking route leads from the Hintergföll inn via the Schwarzbergklamm gorge and the Muckklause to the Gföller Mahder meadows. If you specifically want to include the Muckklause in your hike, it lies along this route as a way station on the way to the Gföller Mahder meadows.

Another hiking trail near Hintergföll starts close to the disused marble quarry and leads to Moarlack and the Hintergföll inn, which lies a little lower down. Its sequence of destinations therefore differs from that of the “Gföller Mahder 1” route: here, Moarlack and the inn follow the starting area, while the Schwarzbergklamm gorge, Muckklause and Gföller Mahder meadows are the named stops on the other route.

A 30-minute, 1.5-kilometre trail leads to the Wildschütz inn in the Gföll district. Its walking time and length give you a concrete point of reference for assessing this route option; no starting point is specified.

The Mäanderweg runs between Moosrem and the “Alpengasthof Heutal” across the boggy valley floor. One hike leads from Moarlack to the “Alpenwirtschaft Heutal” and returns through the raised bog along the level Mäanderweg. Parking is permitted at “Talbruck”; the hike takes about two hours without a stop at an inn. This gives you a basis for comparing its duration with the 30-minute walk to the Wildschütz inn.

Mountain bike trail and cross-country ski trail

A well-developed mountain bike trail with excellent views starts in the valley at Unken and climbs over the Sonnberg to Heutal and the Wildalm. The route names several points: Unken as the starting point, the Sonnberg along the way, and Heutal and the Wildalm as the direction of travel. This makes it easy to distinguish the tour from the hikes to the Gföller Mahder meadows or the inns.

From the Georg Flatscher ski school, you can access a 30-kilometre cross-country ski trail directly. The trail’s length gives you a concrete point of reference for planning cross-country skiing; it is quite different from the described hikes to individual destinations. If cross-country skiing is one of your travel interests, you can include this activity separately in your plans for your stay.

Music and historic buildings

The “Gföller Musi” was officially founded in 1924. Traditionally, the musicians learned by ear and played all the pieces from memory; the influence of family traditions is also part of this heritage. The founding year and the playing style offer different insights: one places the Musi in a specific historical period, while the other describes how the musicians learned and performed their pieces.

The Muckklause is an imposing stone and timber structure on the Unken timber rafting route; it was renovated in 1975. It is also a named way station on the “Gföller Mahder 1” route. This destination thus brings together a specific hiking route and a connection to the Unken timber rafting route.

The former Gföll forester’s house, previously known as Rauschgütl, is now a private home. In the mid-19th century, Nikolaus Rainer sold it, together with 6 Joch and 980 square Klafter in Austrian units of measure, to the Royal Bavarian Saltworks Administration. The former name and the details of the sale place the house within a specific history of ownership, while also acknowledging its present-day private use.
