Hütten near Leogang brings together themes from mining history and sacred Gothic art, with a specific connection to cycling. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay here, these highlights can help you decide whether to focus on cultural history or a cycling tour. The historic sites differ in function: the chapel, residential and defensive tower, administrative building and smithy each represent a different chapter in the town’s history.

Mining History and Sacred Art

The Leogang Mining and Gothic Museum showcases mining masterpieces and sacred Gothic art of the highest European quality. It is located in the mining village of Hütten near Leogang. Annakapelle is part of this mining village and was built from 1769 to 1770 in honor of Saint Anne, the patron saint of miners. The chapel contains one of only five mining altars preserved in Europe. Its dedication connects mining history with religious devotion, and the altar provides tangible evidence of this connection.

Thurnhaus is also part of Hütten’s historic architecture. The medieval residential and defensive tower dates back to the 13th century and was later used by miners as a grain store. Its name initially describes two functions of the building: living and defense. Its later use as a store marks another chapter in its history. Today, Thurnhaus houses medieval collections of international renown.

Administration, Buildings and Metalworking

Gewerkenhaus, also known as Administrator House, was built in 1593. Until the beginning of the 19th century, it served as an administrative building for the local mines. Its recorded function thus differed from that of Thurnhaus: administration was the primary purpose here, while the tower was initially used as a residence and defensive structure, and later as a store.

Hüttwirt has been in existence since 1521 and is considered one of the oldest buildings in the region. Hüttschmiede adds a craft connected with the mining past to the history of the buildings: from the 16th century onward, it was part of a smelting works in the mining village of Hütten. Since 2012, volunteer blacksmiths have been demonstrating the art of metalworking to visitors there. Hütten’s historic building functions thus stand alongside a craft demonstrated for visitors.

Natural Monument, Cycling Route and Visitor Planning

The Kaiser Linden tree provides a different focal point alongside the historic buildings. It was planted in 1898 and is Leogang’s first natural monument. For cycling plans, the LE 01 Forsthofalm Loop is a clearly named option: it first follows the cycle path to Hütten and then continues into the Schwarzleotal valley. If you plan to ride this route, check for any temporary notices about route conditions before setting out.

The new main entrance to the Mining and Gothic Museum is on the south side of Thurnhaus and is fully accessible via a lift. Museum tours are available at any time on request. Arrange your preferred time in advance. Hüttschmiede is open from May to October every Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., as well as during special events. Check the current schedule before you travel so you can plan your visit and the demonstration accordingly.
