Hasenbach is relevant in several contexts: as a stop on line 640, as the endpoint of the Högmoos–Hasenbach trail, and as the starting point of the Salzach route from Hasenbach. Cycling routes in the municipality of Taxenbach and the Taxenbach Gorge (Kitzlochklamm) are also part of planning a trip around the municipality. If you are looking for a hotel, these different highlights can help you plan a stay that combines travel, hiking, cycling and scenery.

Getting here on line 640

In the 2026 timetable for line 640, the Taxenbach Hasenbach stop is between Taxenbach Högmoos and Taxenbach-Rauris railway station. The timetable includes validity periods beginning on 14 December 2025. The sequence of stops provides a guide for travelling on this line. Before setting off, check which timetable period applies to your travel date.

Hiking trails and stages

The Högmoos–Hasenbach trail leads from Högmoos uphill along an old lane to Kleinsonnberg. There, it branches off towards Hasenbach. Kleinsonnberg is therefore the named point from which the route description heads towards Hasenbach. The trail is also identified as the preceding section of stage ET12 of the Hohe Tauern Panorama Trail. For hikers planning by stage number, this classification adds to the orientation provided by place and trail names.

The Salzach and its rocky landscape

From Hasenbach, the Salzach cuts into solid rock for the first time. The stretch up to the mouth of the Rauriser Ache is gorge-like in places; on either side, rock walls up to 40 m high, unsmoothed by glaciers, rise above the river, while the Salzach forms rapids. The gorge-like character applies to parts of the stretch, not every section. “Unsmoothed by glaciers” means that glaciers did not smooth the rock faces. Another connection to the local waterways is the Wolfbach, which flows into the Salzach at the level of the village of Hasenbach, in the municipality of Taxenbach.

Cycling in the municipality

The cycling tour to Pension Wiesfleck starts in the centre of Taxenbach and follows the Tauern Cycle Path upstream along the Salzach towards Gries. On this tour, Hasenbach is a waypoint 2.5 km after the start in Taxenbach. The route measurement may change if the route is revised. The cross-border Tauern Cycle Path passes directly through Taxenbach; the tour described follows this cycle path and names Hasenbach as a waypoint.

Taxenbach Gorge

In the Taxenbach Gorge (Kitzlochklamm), walkways and tunnels dating from the 16th century lead hikers and walkers through the gorge to an idyllic hermitage. Unlike the Högmoos–Hasenbach trail, whose route is described via Kleinsonnberg, the focus here is on the walkways and tunnels along the way to the hermitage.
