Thumersbach on Lake Zell: Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Thumersbach
Thumersbach combines experiences on Lake Zell with themed trails and cultural sites. When choosing a hotel, you may first want to consider whether you would like to focus your stay more on time by the water, hiking or culture. Local attractions offer different ways to do this: a lido on the eastern shore, a high-altitude promenade with views of the lake, and several places with their own history or art.
Hiking between forest, lake and themed stations
The hiking trail network in Thumersbach covers around 70 kilometres as a guide. One specific option is the themed trail “Thumersbacher Höhenpromenade – Guestbook”: it runs through a forest and offers views of Lake Zell. Seven stations are dedicated to notable people who have left their mark on Zell am See-Kaprun. The presentations at individual stations may change. The trail thus combines nature and lake views with a thematic focus.
The eleventh stage of the Hohe Tauern Panorama Trail leads to Thumersbach, before the ascent to the Thumersbacher Höhenpromenade begins. This distinguishes the stage description from the themed route itself: the Höhenpromenade focuses on the forest, lake views and the seven stations dedicated to notable people; on the Panorama Trail, Thumersbach is the point before the ascent. If you are planning a hike, bear in mind that trail conditions can change.
Lido on the eastern shore of Lake Zell
The Thumersbach lido is on the eastern shore of Lake Zell and offers direct access to the lake. If you would like to include time for swimming in your stay, check the seasonal opening dates before you travel. The lido can also be reached by boat from Zell am See. Boat services run seasonally, and timetables may change, so check the timetable for your travel dates. The lido’s seasonal operation and the seasonal boat service are two separate planning considerations: the first concerns visiting the lido, while the second concerns travelling from Zell am See.
Cultural history and outdoor art
The Lohninghof in the Thumersbach district of Zell is a building almost 1,000 years old. Since reopening in 2002, it has been an established part of the Pinzgau cultural scene and offers a varied programme. This includes the permanent exhibition “Dream and Reality” about the Expressionist painter Alfred Kubin. It is on display at the Lohninghof, Seeuferstraße 6, until 31 October 2027. The building and exhibition thus bring together two different cultural themes: the long history of the house and an exploration of Kubin’s work.
The Thumersbach filial church is another specific point of interest for those interested in cultural history: it is dedicated to Saint Sigismund and was rebuilt in 1684/85. The SkulpturPark Thumersbach offers a different perspective. It features seven large-scale sculptures in stone, wood and metal and has hosted an outdoor exhibition since 2007. The individual works may change over time.
