Ebersbrunn: Viticulture and Local History
Ebersbrunn offers two clear starting points for planning a trip: a walking trail with a specified distance and walking time, and the history of viticulture and the village. You can tailor your stay to your interests by giving different emphasis to the route and the cultural themes. These include the “Hohenwarth-Mühlbach Route 3,” the Hiata Hut and the village’s long viticultural tradition.
Walk to the Hiata Hut
The “Hohenwarth-Mühlbach Route 3” is an easy walking trail covering 5.1 kilometres. The route is listed as taking about 1 hour and 15 minutes, with an elevation gain of 108 metres. It starts at Ebersbrunn village square. From there, it heads east through a sunken lane, through woodland and past vineyards. It crosses the road and then follows gravel and vineyard terraces to the idyllic “Hiata Hut,” before returning to Ebersbrunn.
The distance, approximate time required and elevation gain make it easy to fit the walk into your stay. The Hiata Hut offers insight into the life of a vineyard keeper and connects the route with a subject that has a long tradition in Ebersbrunn.
Viticulture and “Open Cellar Doors”
Ebersbrunn has a long viticultural tradition. The red wine varieties Blauer Zweigelt and Blauburger have grown in importance in local wine production. Conditions for white wines also shape viticulture here: the climate on the southern slope of the Weinviertel towards the Wagram and Danube Valley, slightly sandy loess, clay and gravel soils, and temperature differences between day and night during the ripening period favour fruity, zesty white wines. The development of the red wine varieties mentioned and the conditions described for white wines can therefore be seen as distinct aspects of local viticulture.
During the annual “Open Cellar Doors” event, individual wineries offer their wines along with culinary delights. Dates and participating wineries may vary. If you are planning a visit for the event, check the latest dates and which wineries are taking part in advance.
Chapel and Historical Traces
Ebersbrunn was first mentioned in 1110 in a document from Melk Abbey. The earliest documented form of the village name is “Eberichesbrunnen.” Since 1759, Ebersbrunn has belonged to the parish of Hohenwarth, after the village left the parish district of Ravelsbach. The early documentary mention and the later change in parish affiliation mark two distinct periods in the village’s history.
The village chapel is dedicated to St Augustine and is a listed monument. Its exterior was renovated in 1984. The Hiata Hut, meanwhile, was exemplary renovated by Anton Kisser, the last vineyard keeper in Ebersbrunn. It offers insight into the life of a vineyard keeper. Together, the chapel and hut showcase different aspects of the village’s culture: its religious history and the work associated with viticulture.
