Discover Zellerndorf: Kellergasse, Church and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Zellerndorf
If you are considering Zellerndorf as a destination for a stay, you can plan around three specific themes: Gothic architectural history, Kellergasse culture and cycling routes. The parish church with its charnel house, Maulavern Kellergasse and the routes described offer different points of interest for your days here. Train connections also provide concrete information for your journey.
Gothic Church and Charnel House
North of Zellerndorf stands the parish church, dedicated to Saints Philip and James. It is a Gothic hall church and was built in the first half of the 14th century. The charnel house lies south of the church and dates from the second quarter of the 14th century. The two buildings form a historic focal point, and their construction dates can be clearly distinguished.
Maulavern Kellergasse and Visitor Information
Maulavern Kellergasse begins immediately west of the village of Zellerndorf. It is around 750 metres long and surrounded by vineyards. If you are interested in winegrowing and Kellergassen, its location and length provide a clear guide to this part of your stay.
The cellars in Maulavern Kellergasse are open only during events or guided tours. If you would like to see a cellar from the inside, check in advance for a suitable date. The Pumpkin Festival has been held annually since 1994 on the last Saturday in October in Maulavern Kellergasse, west of the market town. Check the event details before travelling if you plan to attend the festival.
Guided walks through Zellerndorf’s Kellergassen explore the history of the “villages without chimneys”, winegrowing in the past and “Naive Architecture”. If you would like to delve into these historical and architectural themes rather than attend a festival, the walk is a suitable option. Confirm your participation in advance.
Choose a Route by Its Course and Length
The Veltliner Tour includes several named stops: Grüner Veltliner Square, Maulavern Kellergasse with its cellar museum, Radlerrast, Ranklkreuz, Schiefer Weg, Schloßmühle, the Kuchl- und Kölla Museum, and the parish church of Saints Philip and James with its charnel house. The route therefore provides an overview of several cultural sites and places to visit.
By contrast, the BERG und TAL route can be identified by its course: it starts at Veltliner Square in the municipality of Zellerndorf, runs through Maulavern Kellergasse to the municipality of Deinzendorf, and returns to Zellerndorf via Point Kellergasse. The Weinviertel DAC wine cycling route is around 55 kilometres long, passes through several villages on its way to Zellerndorf, and runs past Maulavern Kellergasse there. To choose between them, you can compare different features: named stops on the Veltliner Tour, the starting point and return on BERG und TAL, and a stated distance for the wine cycling route.
Other Places to Visit
In Platt, within the municipality of Zellerndorf, the Stone Age & Celtic Cellar in Platt displays finds from the excavations at Sandberg as well as finds from the region’s settlement history, which spans more than 7,000 years. This point of interest complements the architectural history with archaeological finds and the region’s long settlement history.
The renaturalisation of the Pulkau stream in Watzelsdorf created several ponds and flowing bodies of water. There is a playground directly in front of SchloĂźmĂĽhle. Children can play and run around at Riedlplatzl. These details add further specific places to visit to the historical and landscape-related themes.
