Wine Cellar Lanes and Architectural History
The Royal Wine Cellar Lane in Dürnleis consists of more than 40 wine presses and small wine cellars. A guided tour of the lane offers insights into its history and architecture. If you’d like to join one, it’s best to check before your trip whether a tour is available on your chosen date. The small KöllaKredenz Museum is located right in the wine cellar lane.
The wine cellar quarter between Dürnleis and Kammersdorf grew from ten cellars recorded in 1751 into an ensemble of around 29 buildings.
The Maria Schnee Chapel also has several clearly identifiable historical features. The Federal Monuments Authority’s register for Lower Austria, dated June 23, 2026, lists the chapel at Dürnleis 12 as protected by decree. The Baroque building on the village green dates from the first half of the 18th century. Sandstone statues of Saint Florian and John the Baptist stand in the round-arched niches of the apse. An apse is the usually semicircular or polygonal end of a church interior. Round-arched niches are recesses in a wall with arched tops. At Maria Schnee, the sandstone statues of Saint Florian and John the Baptist stand in niches of this kind. The apse forms the larger end of the space; the niches divide its wall surface with the statues. The round arch describes the shape of the niches, not the apse as a whole.
Another datable trace of the town’s history is the bridges over the Dürnleisergraben. They were built by Italian prisoners of war in 1914/15. Three of the five bridges are in the town, and two are out in the fields.
Cycling Connection Between Dürnleis and Kleinweikersdorf
A continuous walking and cycling route between Kleinweikersdorf and Dürnleis was reported complete on September 5, 2025. The approximately 1.5-kilometer missing link runs along the north side of the Haslacher Graben and connects to the existing municipal road network at both ends. This gives the approximate length and route of the connecting section.
The new cycling facilities along this route were designated as bicycle streets.
Winegrowing and Places to Eat
