Alberndorf in the Pulkau Valley: Winegrowing, Culture and History
Accommodation in Alberndorf in the Pulkau Valley
Alberndorf in the Pulkau Valley combines winegrowing in the northern Weinviertel with historical traces, ecclesiastical art and opportunities to stay active. Its themes range from the cellar lane and prehistoric finds to viewpoints and cycling routes. When choosing a destination, you can consider whether you would rather focus on wine and architectural heritage, local history or an excursion in the Pulkau Valley.
Winegrowing and the Cellar Lane
Alberndorf is a winegrowing community in the heart of the Pulkau Valley. Press houses line the cellar lane; some still contain filled wine barrels in vaulted tunnels or sand cellars. These buildings make the local wine culture visible in its architectural form, too. The approximately 100-year-old Rain cellar was restored and opened to guests, cyclists and hikers. From there, guests can enjoy the cellar lane typical of the Pulkau Valley over refreshing drinks. Seasonal operating details may change. If you would like to stop there, check whether it is open before your visit.
Early Traces and European History
Among the oldest evidence of human culture in Alberndorf is an approximately 28,000-year-old Upper Palaeolithic hunting station. Ice Age finds include bones of mammoths and woolly rhinoceroses. Finds from the hill range south of Alberndorf also point to the shoreline of a Tertiary sea that existed here 70 million years ago. The area's historical and landscape connections thus span from a very early human trace to a much older geological past.
A manor called Adalberno-Villa in Alberndorf is mentioned in the year 1100 in connection with the granting of a fief to an Adeloloth, who called himself Adelberndorfer. Another historical reference dates from 1974, when the Council of Europe named Alberndorf the first village to be a European Village.
Ecclesiastical Art and Protected Monuments
The history of St. Lawrence Parish Church can be traced through individual works of art. Its original furnishings came from the decommissioned pilgrimage church of St. Peter am Stein near Grund. The original altarpiece, “Lawrence with the Gridiron,” was restored in 1978 and returned to the high altar. Sacred monuments are also part of the village landscape: the Pietà Maria Dreieichen and the statue of St. John of Nepomuk near Kellergasse 22 are listed for protection as monuments under the regulation in the Federal Monuments Authority’s register dated June 23, 2026. The tabernacle pillar at the start of Kellertrift is protected as a monument under the regulation for the district of Hollabrunn.
Views and Routes in the Pulkau Valley
The Heidberg observation tower combines a scenic view with the area's history of border restrictions. It is a remnant of the time when the free world ended at the nearby Austrian-Czech border. From the tower, the view extends over the area's vineyards and, in good visibility, as far as the Danube and the Czech Republic.
For cycling in the region, the Polt cycling route is an easy 51.56-kilometre circular tour through the Pulkau Valley, passing filming locations from the Polt film series. The Pulkau Valley wine experience tour passes through Alberndorf. The routes offer different points of interest: the Polt cycling route has a specified loop, length and difficulty, while the wine experience tour offers a connection to the village. Check current route conditions before setting off.
Local Recreation
A fenced beach volleyball court was built in Alberndorf as a recreational and sports facility for adults, teenagers and children; the court is suitable for tournaments. A garden shower and drinking water from the tap are available beside it. The adjacent youth centre in the former milk house also has a toilet and additional showers. If you would like to use the facility or its amenities, check local availability before your visit.
