Amstetten can be discovered through a wide range of themes: Mostviertel pear culture, routes through the countryside and landmarks of Austrian history. The Mostelleria, the Ybbstal Cycle Path and the museums each offer their own distinctive highlights. You can plan your trip around the experiences that interest you most.

MOSTELLO and Most pears

At the Mostelleria, an interactive exhibition offers insights into how MOSTELLO is made. This pear dessert wine is made from old, rare Most pear varieties from the surrounding area. Visitors can also enjoy tastings from the barrels in the maturing cellar. The exhibition, product and tasting offer different ways to discover a regional speciality: from how it is made to experiencing it in the cellar.

Routes with different focuses

The “On the trail of the Forstheide” discovery trail features 2.1 kilometres and 14 interactive stations. The Ybbstal Cycle Path is laid out differently: its 55-kilometre main section runs between Waidhofen an der Ybbs and Lunz am See. The route follows the former Ybbstalbahn railway line, is flat and runs close to the river. The two options differ in length, route and mode of travel; no walking or cycling time can be inferred from this information.

The new Pear Trail in Ă–hling also follows in the footsteps of Johann Kirchweger. He was a supporter of Landesklinikum Mauer and a pioneer of Most pear culture. The Pear Trail is a new visitor attraction for 2026; check its condition before your visit. At Sonntagberg, the Panoramic Heights Trail invites you to enjoy a scenic hike.

Nature and wildlife watching

Tierpark Stadt Haag is located in the 33-hectare park of Schloss Salaberg. Around 70 native and exotic animal species live there, with approximately 700 animals in total. These figures may change over time. If you would like to explore the animal park on a guided tour, you can book one online or by phone.

Museums and architectural history

The Mostviertler Bauernmuseum focuses on the working and domestic life of Mostviertel farmers. It also features rural workshop exhibits representing 20 different crafts. The collection comprises around 22,000 objects from the lives of Mostviertel farmers and craftspeople.

The Ostarrichi Museum in Neuhofen an der Ybbs tells the story of Austrian history in seven steps: it begins with the famous “Ostarrichi document” and ends with the signing of the treaty establishing the European Union. The museum explores the origins of Austria. At Sonntagberg, the basilica is considered one of Europe’s most important pilgrimage sites. The present-day minor basilica, with its distinctive twin towers, was built by Baroque master builders Jakob Prandtauer and Josef Mungenast.

Schloss Ulmerfeld also offers an opportunity to explore architectural history: it was structurally modernised and made accessible in 2026. If accessibility is important for your plans, confirm the specific details before you travel.

Rail travel and trip planning

A regional train runs hourly from Amstetten to Waidhofen an der Ybbs, stopping at several stations along the Ybbstal Cycle Path. Timetables differ on weekdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, so check the schedule for your travel date before setting off. ÖBB Railjet and Westbahn trains also stop in Amstetten. Bicycles can be taken on these trains, although service information may change along with the operators’ timetables.
