Several hiking trails pass through Pfaffenberg or have a turnoff there. Other attractions include historic buildings, a rural heritage museum and natural sites. For your stay, you can focus on a specific route, history or the landscape.

Hiking and Pilgrimage Routes

The second stage of the Sonntagberg Trail passes through Pfaffenberg on its way to Zeillern; the second stage of the Mostviertel Way of St. James also runs through Pfaffenberg to Zeillern. On the Austrian Way of St. James, the turnoff at Pfaffenberg follows a small road, passes a wayside shrine and descends to the Denkenbachl stream. For navigation, it makes a difference whether you focus on a named stage heading towards Zeillern or a turnoff with specific waypoints.

A marked 10,000-step trail passes the Jägerkreuz, Steinerne Stube and Panoramastein. Here, the focus is on named sights along the route. The Matrassteig can be identified by different features: it runs from the Grein Danube Bridge up to the Brandstetterkogel, climbing just under 300 metres. When choosing between these trails, you can consider whether named stops along the way or the combination of starting point, destination and elevation gain matters more to you.

Cultural History and Rural Traditions

The Georgssäule is a nine-metre-high early Baroque work of art, erected between 1650 and 1664. Its date of erection places the work in the 17th century and provides a specific historical context for its early Baroque classification.

The pillory is a monument to the old market court. Today, it forms the pillar of a wayside cross in the market square. This object offers a way to consider its historical function and present-day form together: the pillory recalls the former court and is also part of the wayside cross that stands there today.

The museum at the Nadlingerhof, run by Hans Freudenberger, is an interactive museum in a very old farmhouse. There, you can experience rural traditions and culture; the visitor offering also includes a Mostviertel snack. This combines insights into past rural life with a specific culinary element.

The earliest precise mention of Freyenstein dates from the early Babenberg period. This historical reference adds an early chapter in local history to the cultural topics.

Nature and Views

Wörth Island has been a nature reserve since 1970 and covers 13.5 hectares. There are three ponds on the island, with a combined area of 1.81 hectares. The two figures therefore refer to different areas: one to the island as a whole, the other to the ponds together.

The Reiterkogel is 520 metres above sea level and is a viewpoint and a local recreation spot. On clear days, the view from the Panoramastein extends across the northern foothills and the Northern Limestone Alps, from the Schneeberg to the Traunstein. The view is therefore dependent on clear weather; the named peaks indicate the span of the panorama described.
