Ertl: Hiking, Views and Local History
Accommodation in Ertl
Ertl offers several distinct points of interest for planning a trip: hiking trails with named destinations, expansive views across the Mostviertel, a cycling route, and a history of buildings and the landscape. When looking for a hotel for your stay in Ertl, consider which of these themes you would like to shape your visit.
Hiking trails with different destinations
The Voralpenblick hiking trail is 11.5 km long. It leads to the Voralpenblick viewing tower, continues to St. Michael/Bruckbach and follows the Urlbach back to Ertl. The distance provides a specific point of reference for planning your hike; the route also identifies other stops and the return to Ertl.
The Url-Ursprung hiking trail passes the Hubertus Chapel and reaches the source of the Url. While the Voralpenblick trail has a specified length and passes a series of named places, you can distinguish the Url-Ursprung trail by its chapel and destination. This gives you two different points of reference when choosing a hike: a trail with a viewpoint and a series of places, or a route featuring the Hubertus Chapel and the source of the Url.
Views across the Mostviertel
The Voralpenblick viewing tower offers expansive views across the hilly Mostviertel landscape to the foothills of the Alps. As the destination of the hiking trail of the same name, it combines the views with a specific route. The landscape and the route are two aspects that can help you decide whether this is the right outing for you.
Parish church and local history
Ertl Parish Church stands in the town centre at the confluence of the Kohlenbach and Urlbach rivers. The relatively large church is built in the Neo-Gothic style. Construction began in 1901, based on plans by architect Franz Pichlwanger; the building was completed in 1913, and the church was dedicated to the Holy Family on 26 May 1914. The start of construction, completion and dedication mark different stages. The Neo-Gothic classification, meanwhile, describes the style, not the date. You can thus explore the church through its location, architecture and history of construction.
Remains of a hilltop castle complex can be found near the summit of Hausnerkogel. The terrain was artificially reshaped to build it. This historic site encompasses both the surviving remains and the alteration of the landscape, adding a perspective on the shaped landscape to the parish church’s architectural history.
Cycling route and getting there
The Stiftsblick cycling route passes through Monument, Ertl and Bruckbach on its way to St. Michael. The sequence of place names gives you a point of reference for this cycling route and complements the hiking trails mentioned above with another way to plan an outing.
One way to get there is to take a Westbahn train to Seitenstetten–St. Peter/Au and then continue to Ertl by bus. Check the current timetables before departure so you can plan your onward journey.
