When planning your trip to Wolfsbach, you can start with two themes: architectural and art history, or trails through the Mostviertel. This also gives your hotel search a specific purpose: Would you mainly like to explore local architecture, compare different types of trails, or include views from Grillenberg? The sites and routes offer different ways to do so.

Church and Art in Wolfsbach

Wolfsbach Parish Church stands slightly elevated in the centre of the village and is surrounded by a cemetery. Architecturally, it is a Late Gothic hall church with a west tower at the front and a recessed polygonal choir. Archaeological investigations at the church also revealed a towerless Carolingian hall church, probably dating from the 9th century. Two historical layers can therefore be found in the same place: the Late Gothic building and archaeological evidence of a much older church.

The church interior also features architectural details: it has elaborate net rib vaults and newly uncovered Late Gothic seating and reliquary niches. Wolfsbach Village Chapel offers a different perspective on culture. It was built in 2003 by the Municipality of Wolfsbach in collaboration with the local cultural association, based on a design by DI HR Friedrich Fischer. It features the art project “Full House” by Manfred Erjautz. Supported by the Province of Lower Austria, the project presents a “family portrait of the Municipality of Wolfsbach” at the turn of the millennium in around 100 glass cubes. The church and chapel thus offer different points of interest: architectural history and details in one, an artistic portrait of the community in the other.

Historic Routes and Landscapes

Those interested in historic transport routes as well as local history can explore the hiking trail known as the “Roman Road”. It follows an ancient trade route that ran from Ovilava (Wels) to the Roman-era road junction at Mauer. The Moststraße is another regional landmark: the market town of Wolfsbach lies along it. Wolfsbach is therefore a meeting point for various historical and regional connections, from the route of an ancient trade road to its location along the Moststraße.

For views of the landscape, head to Grillenberg, east of Wolfsbach. From there, the view extends across the foothills of the Alps from Ötscher to Traunstein. The 4.5 km Wolfsbach Meditation Trail offers another perspective, leading through the varied landscape in the heart of the Mostviertel. As a spiritual trail, it passes through gentle hills, dark coniferous forests and rows of trees; along the way, you can discover features of the local flora and fauna. The viewpoint and meditation trail appeal to different interests: a sweeping view across the foothills of the Alps, or a trail where the setting and observing nature are part of the experience.

Comparing Hiking Trails

The route lengths make a direct comparison possible: the Meditation Trail is 4.5 km long, while the “Heart of the Mostviertel Circular Hiking Trail” covers more than 110 kilometres and is divided into eight stages. The circular trail connects Aschbach-Markt, Biberbach, Ertl, Seitenstetten, St. Peter in der Au, Weistrach and Wolfsbach. Along the trail, information stations explain the significance of the Mostbirne pear and the region’s rich history. The options range from a single, spiritually oriented trail through different types of landscape to a long route with several stages and regional stops.

When planning your hotel stay, these themes can help you decide what to focus on: the parish church and village chapel offer architecture, archaeological history and art; the Roman Road and circular hiking trail have different historical connections; and the meditation trail and Grillenberg bring the landscape and nature into focus. You can consider which of these interests you would most like to pursue on your trip to Wolfsbach.
