Zavala: History, Remembrance, and Spinach Tradition
Accommodation in Zavala
Zavala can be understood through more than one historical lens: the San Antonio Road ran through the Zavala County region, while several specific remembrance and spinach connections are found in Crystal City. Transportation routes, the history of the Crystal City Family Internment Camp, and local vegetable history offer different cultural points of connection for a trip.
Historic Routes and Supplies
The historic San Antonio Road ran from southwest to northeast through the Zavala County region. Most Spanish explorers and travelers in the 18th century used the route. C.S.A. Camp Nueces represents a different period: it was established in April 1862 to protect traffic crossing the Nueces on the San Antonio–Eagle Pass road.
The logistics involved two directions: cotton went to Mexico; ammunition, medicines, and industrial goods were brought north to supply the Confederacy. Thus, the travel history of the 18th century and the protection and supply of traffic during the Civil War represent different historical contexts.
Remembrance History in Crystal City
The Crystal City Family Internment Camp operated from 1942 to 1948. It was the only INS camp established specifically for families. It was based on the Alien Enemies Act of 1798; the camp served to intern detained noncitizens and reunite families who had been dispersed across multiple detention sites.
Today, eight freestanding panels form an educational trail at the former site. Check local visitor information before visiting. The My Story Museum is the first permanent history museum in Crystal City and is dedicated to preserving local stories. The two places have different focuses: the educational trail relates to the former camp site, while the museum focuses on local stories.
Spinach Tradition and Local History
After the railroad reached Crystal City, the community developed into a major shipping center for winter vegetables. By the 1930s, Crystal City had earned a reputation as the “Spinach Capital of the World.” Vegetable processing is also part of local history: a vegetable cannery opened in Crystal City in 1932. The history of vegetables is therefore reflected in two ways: in the shipment of winter vegetables and in canning.
The first annual Spinach Festival in Crystal City was held in 1936. In 1937, the following year, a statue of Popeye the Sailor Man was erected opposite City Hall. Today it is a popular photo stop. The annual Spinach Festival is an attraction in Zavala County. If you plan to attend the festival, check the dates for that year. Crystal City is also part of the Winter Garden region of Texas.
