Wise appeals to travelers with a variety of interests: Wise County brings together a long-standing public event, nature and outdoor activities, and evidence of regional history. When planning a hotel stay, it’s worth identifying the main purpose of your trip. A visit to the Wise County Reunion, the paddling trail, and a museum visit are distinct highlights, each of which can be incorporated into your travel plans.

Event Tradition and Outdoor Experiences

The Wise County Reunion is the county’s oldest recurring public event and has used its current venue since 1896. Its long-standing connection to both tradition and place makes the Reunion a specific focal point for event-based travel. If you’re planning your trip around it, check the current event dates in advance.

The Bridgeport Falls Paddling Trail is a 5.8-mile loop on the West Fork of the Trinity River. The 75-mile LBJ Multi-Use Trail System is structured differently: the TADRA Point Trailhead is at the junction of its five loops. These represent two clearly different scales for planning—a single, specified water route and a multi-use system with several loops. The trailhead serves year-round as a base for various noncommercial group events, including endurance rides. Since event dates can change, check the date for each event in advance.

The Waggoner & Sauder Ranch is a working ranch that is still in operation and is one of the oldest and largest of its kind in Wise County. Its diverse natural environment offers plenty for outdoor enthusiasts. Confirm public access and specific activities separately before planning a visit. Fossil Pointe Sporting Grounds offers the public experiences at facilities for sporting clays, rifle, and pistol shooting. Availability and operating details can change, so check current options before visiting.

Historic Sites and Buildings

The Perrin Log Cabin was built between 1855 and 1861. It is the only restored double log cabin in Wise County still standing at its original location. Sam Woody’s Cabin was the first dwelling in the area near Deep Creek. Together, the two cabins illustrate different aspects of regional history.

The Texas Tourist Camp Complex adds another chapter to the history of buildings: by 1931, three wooden cabins with garages had been added there. The restoration of the Wise County Courthouse included preserving its pink granite masonry. Together, these examples offer different themes for a cultural and historical stay—from early dwellings and tourist facilities to the preservation of a distinctive building material.

Museums and Visitor Information

The Wise History Museum is located at 119 N. State Street on the historic Decatur Square. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; check the location details and opening hours before you travel. The museum also includes an archive and research center, adding an archival and scholarly dimension to its subject matter.

The Wise County Veterans Memorial Museum aims to share stories of U.S. wars with visitors from veterans’ perspectives, particularly those of veterans from Wise County. Its current special exhibition focus is on the undeclared conflicts in Korea and Vietnam, as well as the ongoing War on Terror. Special or group visits and events can be arranged in advance with museum staff.

Landscape and Getting There

Across Wise County as a whole, about 40 percent of the land consists of high-quality farmland, and 60 percent is woodland and pasture. These approximate proportions offer a sense of the region’s varied landscape. Decatur’s municipal airport provides access by air, as well as refueling and a place to rest. Since airport services can change, check current information before your trip.
