Robertson County: River Boundaries and Historic Places

Robertson County is bordered by the Brazos River to the west, the Navasota River to the east, and the Old San Antonio Road to the south. These geographic landmarks frame a trip that brings together railroad history, historic sites, and named routes. In Franklin, Hearne, and Calvert, a cemetery, depot, church building, and former public buildings each tell different chapters of local history.

Hearne: Railroads and a Historic Streetscape

The Hearne Depot was built in 1901 and served the Southern Pacific and Missouri Pacific railroad companies for more than 50 years. On a tour, a curator guides visitors through interactive exhibits and historic objects in and around the depot. Check current visiting options before you arrive. The connection between rail and road also shapes how you get around Hearne: Highways 6 and 79 run alongside the railroad tracks there and intersect.

Along Magnolia Street, a lighted water tower, historically appropriate streetlights, vintage signs, and nostalgic park benches are part of the historic downtown streetscape. The design may change over time; if you want to see specific details, check current city information. This makes it possible to combine a visit to the depot with a look at Magnolia Street, without suggesting that both places tell the same story.

Camp Hearne: Camp History and an Interactive Experience

The Camp Hearne historic site preserves building foundations and facilities constructed by prisoners of war. The Camp Hearne Historic Site and Exhibit presents the daily lives of the camp’s predominantly German prisoners of war. Both surviving physical traces and the prisoners’ living conditions are central here.

“The Barracks” offers a different format: This 30-minute interactive experience uses historic objects and replicas, hidden codes, and clues that lead to a final cipher. If you’re interested, check current visiting arrangements in advance; appointment requirements may change. The exhibits and the puzzle experience emphasize different things: one focuses on the camp’s history, the other on presenting it in a playful way.

Franklin: Cemetery and Historic Routes

Franklin Cemetery has more than 1,300 graves, including those of four local musicians who achieved national recognition. The cemetery property was transferred to Robertson County in 1880. That date is part of the property’s history; the graves and the musicians’ biographies provide additional historical connections to the site.

Both the El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail and the Texas Historic Brazos Trail pass through Franklin. These two named historic routes offer their own points of connection for anyone interested in the region’s history.

Calvert: Historic Buildings and Tours by Reservation

Calvert’s former courthouse was converted into a museum in 1966. The Calvert Historic District is listed by the Texas Historical Commission as “Listed”; the date of listing is given as April 3, 1978. The Calvert Historical Foundation offers tours of the district by advance reservation only. If a tour is part of your visit, arrange it in advance and confirm your reservation before you arrive.

Church and community history are also among the county’s documented stories. The present building of St. Phillips Episcopal in Hearne was completed in 1912 and built in the Gothic Revival style. Local women operated the Katy Hamman Stricker Library as a community library in a former meetinghouse of the American Woman's League. In different ways, the two examples tell stories of architecture and community life.

Annual Fair and Announced Event

The Robertson County Fair is held annually at the fairgrounds on FM 485, west of Highway 6. Dates vary from year to year, so it’s a good idea to check the date for that year’s fair before traveling. Downtown Fourth Fridays was also announced in Hearne for July 1, 2026: A monthly gathering on the fourth Friday, featuring food trucks, was planned. Before visiting, check whether the series is now taking place and which date is currently scheduled.

When planning your trip, you can organize the attractions by interest: Hearne offers railroad history, Franklin has a cemetery and historic routes, and Calvert combines the history of a former courthouse with a district for which tours must be reserved. This helps you decide which places and stories suit your stay in Robertson County.
