Henderson County: Lakes, Nature and History
Accommodation in Henderson County
Henderson County offers a range of themes to consider when planning your trip: lakes and fishing, nature trails, historic structures, and an annual celebration of Athens’ agricultural heritage. Which places and activities you focus on depends on what matters to you during your stay.
Lakes and Fishing
Lake Athens lies about 5 miles east of Athens and south of FM 317. The lake is known for largemouth bass weighing 3 to 8 pounds. This gives anglers a specific point of reference when including lakes and fish species in their trip plans.
Cedar Creek Reservoir covers 32,623 acres. Its population of temperate bass is considered high quality and includes numerous white bass and hybrid striped bass. Access includes two public boat ramps and several private marinas. Since the operations of these facilities can change, check their current availability before planning a trip to the reservoir.
Islands and Natural Areas
Cedar Creek Islands Wildlife Management Area consists of three islands totaling 160 acres in Cedar Creek Reservoir. There is one clear restriction on wildlife viewing: it is possible only from a boat or from the reservoir’s shore. Keep this in mind if you want to combine wildlife viewing with a stay by the water.
East Texas Arboretum offers a different natural setting. The grounds cover 100 acres of wooded landscape with trees, flowers, and wildlife. More than two miles of nature trails wind through the arboretum, including a paved and partially landscaped section. There are also spring-fed streams connected by a 115-foot suspension bridge. The grounds thus feature both longer trails and individual landscape features.
Loop Trail or Interpretive Tour
At the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center, two offerings provide different ways to explore the facility: the Ethel Express is an interpretive tour of the outdoor grounds, while the Wetlands Trail is a 1.2-mile loop. This distinction is useful if you want to compare a guided educational experience with a trail of a stated loop distance.
Cain Park also has two clearly defined offerings: a fishing pond and a disc golf course. They accommodate different interests during a park visit without confusing the two activities.
Historic Structures and Local Tradition
Henderson County Courthouse features elements of the Classical Revival style: a central dome and Tuscan columns. Built in 1850, the Wofford House is considered the oldest residence in Henderson County. It has been restored and is fully furnished; the property also includes kitchen and medicinal herb gardens. These details complement the historic architecture with specific features of the house and its gardens.
Another historic building is the Henderson County Jail, a jail cell of about 76 square feet dating to around 1890. It is displayed on the grounds of East Texas Arboretum alongside other 19th-century architectural artifacts. This places natural areas and historic exhibits side by side as distinct themes for a stay.
The annual Black-Eyed Pea Jamboree celebrates Athens’ agricultural heritage and honors resident Fletcher “Uncle Fletch” Davis. According to local tradition, Davis invented the first hamburger. Since the festival date varies from year to year, check the current dates before planning your trip around it.
