Natural areas with trails and waterscapes sit alongside urban green spaces, wildlife, and historic sites in Harris. When planning your trip, it’s worth first considering the kind of experience you’re looking for: Would you like to hike, get out on the water, observe wildlife, or explore historic sites? The places below offer a range of ways to do so.

Experience Nature: Landscapes and Trails

Sheldon Lake State Park & Environmental Learning Center is located in northeastern Harris County. The 2,800-acre park is devoted to environmental education and recreation. Its landscapes include a lake, ponds, wetlands, forests, and prairie. Visitors can fish, hike, paddle, and observe nature there; admission is free. The range of habitats and activities makes the park an option for a stay that combines wildlife observation and outdoor recreation.

Baytown Nature Center also combines nature with trails and activities on the water. The 500-acre peninsula has seven miles of trails. Birdwatching, fishing, kayaking, cycling, and hiking are among the activities available there. This offers several ways to experience the landscape, with the trails forming just one part of what’s on offer.

Armand Bayou Nature Center offers five miles of walking trails, including a Discovery Loop boardwalk and a bison-viewing platform. At Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, five miles of trails and paths wind through a 155-acre nature preserve. The Outer Loop is 1.76 miles long, mostly gravel-surfaced, and passes through savanna, prairie, and forest habitats. The Habitat Hikes are self-guided; each passes an educational station and features points of interest, including ponds with diverse wildlife. The Arboretum’s trails are for hiking only. Visitors can choose between a specific trail with details on its length, surface, and scenery and self-guided hikes featuring interpretive stations and opportunities to observe nature.

Waterways and Urban Green Space

At Buffalo Bayou Park, visitors can get around on foot, by bicycle, or on the water. Bicycles, kayaks, and canoes can be rented through partner providers. The Sandy Reed Memorial Trail is a ten-foot-wide concrete path that runs through the park on both sides of the waterway. Visitors interested in learning more about the site’s history and architecture can consider the fully guided tour of the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern. The cistern was built in 1926 as a drinking-water reservoir for the City of Houston.

Discovery Green offers another kind of green space: this 12-acre urban park is located in the heart of downtown Houston. Together with trails through natural areas and the waterscapes of Buffalo Bayou, it shows the different ways green spaces can be incorporated into trip plans. More than 600 different animal species live at the Houston Zoo. The Galápagos Islands exhibit recreates an environment inspired by the archipelago’s unique landscapes and marine habitats. The Houston Museum of Natural Science also has a butterfly center, a planetarium, and a giant-screen theater.

Historic Sites

At Independence Plaza, visitors can board the Independence shuttle replica and explore the historic, original NASA 905 shuttle carrier aircraft. The Battleship Texas, meanwhile, fought in both world wars. In 1948, the ship was transferred to the State of Texas to serve as a museum and memorial. The Battleship Texas arrived at the San Jacinto Battleground near Houston, Texas. The Battle of San Jacinto is considered one of the decisive battles in American history. Along with the Cistern, whose former function as a drinking-water reservoir dates back to 1926, these sites add different chapters of history to the nature and urban experiences.
