Baytown offers nature trails, waterfront attractions, historic buildings, sculptures and recreational activities. When planning your trip, you can organize the highlights according to your interests: scenery and exercise, activities on the water, history or art. This helps you decide which aspects of the destination you want to shape your stay before looking for a hotel in Baytown.

Nature and Trails in Baytown

The Baytown Nature Center is a 500-acre peninsula with seven miles of trails and views of the bays. Activities available there include birdwatching, fishing, kayaking, cycling, hiking, running, photography and geocaching. The options range from observation and photography to exercise on foot or by bike, as well as activities on the water. The peninsula, trail network and bay views give these varied interests a shared scenic setting.

The Eddie Gray Wetlands Center is an official site on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. Birdwatching is also one of the activities available at the Baytown Nature Center. The Goose Creek Trail runs along Goose Creek and Tabbs Bay and passes through coastal marshes, prairies and forests. The difference is clear when choosing nature-related activities: the Nature Center offers a peninsula, trails and bay views, while the Goose Creek Trail focuses on its route along two waterways and the landscapes along the trail.

The Baytown Nature Center is open daily year-round, except on Christmas, Thanksgiving and during extremely bad weather. The gates open 30 minutes before sunrise and close 30 minutes after sunset. This provides a clear timeframe for planning your day; in extreme weather, check the latest notices before setting out.

Activities on the Water

Bayland Park has public boat ramps and a kayak ramp for recreational boating or fishing in Tabbs Bay, at the mouth of Goose Creek. A floating kayak ramp into Crystal Bay has been completed at the Baytown Nature Center. The ramps serve different waterways: Bayland Park provides access to Tabbs Bay at the mouth of Goose Creek, while the floating ramp at the Nature Center leads into Crystal Bay. This makes it easy to distinguish the water activities by their specified locations and waterways.

History and Art

The Republic of Texas Plaza in Baytown is home to the one-room Wooster School, built in 1894, and the Brown-McKay House, built in 1910. The Baytown Historical Preservation Association preserves and interprets both buildings. Their construction dates and building types distinguish these historic structures; their shared location at the plaza and the work of the same organization connect them as a way to explore Baytown’s history.

Roseland Park is Baytown’s oldest park. Another cultural highlight is the Baytown Sculpture Trail, which consists of 25 unique statues. The number of sculptures may change. While the historic buildings can be understood through their architecture and preservation, the Sculpture Trail centers on the individual statues.

Events and Recreation

Baytown’s Grito Fest takes place every October at Bicentennial Park. If you plan your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates in advance. Pirates Bay Waterpark, by contrast, focuses on water attractions, including a lazy river, various slide towers, a wave pool, a FlowRider and NinjaCross. The selection includes different types of water-park attractions. Since attractions and operations may change, check the latest information before your visit.
