Dewitt County: Discover Museums, History, and Nature
Accommodation in Dewitt County
Museums in Cuero and Yoakum, historic buildings, and the Guadalupe River offer different highlights on a trip through Dewitt County. In the collections, you can explore the history of ranching, the railroad, and everyday life; along the river, paddling and wildlife watching take center stage. Wildflowers, walking trails, and seasonal events are also among the options to consider when planning your trip.
Museums and Historic Sites
The Cuero Heritage Museum is located in Cuero’s former post office, a building constructed in 1915. The Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum offers a different perspective on the county’s history, preserving stories and memories of its agricultural and cowboy past. Artifacts from the era of the great cattle drives on display there include authentic lassos, saddles, and a covered wagon.
At the DeWitt County Historical Museum, the building itself also tells a story. The Bates-Sheppard Home, where the museum is located, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a Texas Historical Landmark. The grounds include a two-room log cabin with a covered breezeway between the rooms, as well as an old-fashioned garden where visitors can stroll. With its Richardsonian Romanesque style and six-story clock tower, the De Witt County Courthouse adds another architectural highlight; it is designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark.
In Cuero, the Pharmacy and Medical Museum of Texas preserves ornately decorated cabinets and an intact workbench used for compounding medicines. In Yorktown, the Historical Museum displays historic photographs, newspapers, documents, furniture, clothing, household appliances, tools, and books. It is housed in two former C Eckhardt & Sons buildings. Those interested in Yoakum’s development can find permanent exhibits at the Yoakum Heritage Museum about the city as a railroad hub, a center of the leather goods industry, and a tomato-growing and shipping center. A separate room is dedicated to Yoakum’s military history. Many buildings in the Downtown Yoakum Historical Business District have been restored and still house businesses; the restored Grand Theater opened in 2016.
The Old Chisholm Trail is also associated with a specific event in regional history: it commemorates a cattle drive of 1,800 longhorns that set out from the DeWitt County area for northern markets on April 1, 1866. The Cuero I Archeological District extends for 45 miles along the Guadalupe River Basin. Archaeological investigations there identified 352 significant prehistoric and historic sites that document 9,000 years of human settlement.
Guadalupe River and Nature
The Guadalupe Valley Paddling Trail offers several ways to plan time on the water: the trail is 13.8 miles long and can be paddled as a half-day trip or in shorter sections over a few hours. Estimated travel times for the trail range from about three to eight hours. Water levels, current speed, and wind affect these estimates, so check conditions as you plan. The Guadalupe River is home to catfish, sunfish, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and Guadalupe bass.
The river’s riparian corridor supports a wide variety of plant and animal species along the water and beyond. Birds in the area include herons, wading birds, and kingfishers; paddlers may occasionally spot bald eagles as well. Cuero is also part of the Guadalupe Loop of the Texas Coastal Birding Trail. Nature enthusiasts may also want to look out for wildflowers: more than 1,000 different species have been documented in DeWitt County, blooming at different times.
Walking Trails, Wildflowers, and Events
The walking trail at Cuero Municipal Park is 2.85 miles long and has benches at various points. The park also has a lake and a lighted fishing pier. The county’s official Wildflower Month is celebrated in April; bloom times may vary depending on the weather. The Cuero Chamber of Commerce, Agriculture & Visitor Bureau provides wildflower identification brochures and tickets that come with maps to scenic areas. Because visitor information can change, ask there about currently available materials.
Events are another reason to factor dates into your plans. Cuero Turkeyfest includes an annual parade and three days of music and entertainment; the program may vary from year to year. At Cuero's Christmas in the Park, free hot cocoa is served to visitors every Thursday in December from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. This seasonal program can also change, so it’s a good idea to check event dates before visiting.
