A jail built in 1884 now houses the Frio Pioneer Jail Museum—a striking gateway to the history of Frio County. Nearby, the former community of Frio Town, the Frio River, and the recreational destinations around Pearsall offer different ways to explore the area. Interstate Highway 35 runs through Moore, Pearsall, and Dilley; recurring events add local and landscape themes throughout the year.

Getting Around and Recreation

Interstate Highway 35 runs north to south through Moore, Pearsall, and Dilley. In Pearsall, Frio Regional Park is southwest of town at the intersection of Interstate Highway 35 and Farm to Market Road 1581. Frio County Community Fishing Pond is south of the park on Gilliam Road. These distinct location details help you tell the park and pond apart on a map.

Firemans Park is next to the historic Frio Pioneer Jail Museum. Its play area includes slides, climbing structures, swings, and jungle gyms. So, along with the museum, the county offers specific recreational amenities—though the two neighboring places are not the same destination.

Frio Town and County History

Built in 1884, the Frio County jail now houses the Frio Pioneer Jail Museum. The museum’s former sheriff’s quarters comprise five rooms and contain artifacts and historical photographs. The museum’s annual Pioneer Day takes place at the old jail and at the relocated Frio Town School, bringing together two named locations for the event.

Frio Town was known as Frio City from 1871 to 1886 and served as the first county seat of Frio County from 1871 to 1883. The periods do not end at the same time: the name Frio City remained in use until 1886, while Frio Town was the county seat until 1883. Frio Town Cemetery is one of the few remaining tangible reminders of the historic community and represents the county’s early pioneer history. The first burials there took place in 1873.

The history of the roads also has a place in the county’s story: the Old Presidio Road ran through Frio County and became a camino real, or royal road. The Bigfoot Wallace Museum is also located in the community of Bigfoot.
