The contrast between the two types of towers offers a tangible look at the collection’s construction styles. Visitors can explore the JB Buchanan Vintage Windmill Collection in Spearman on foot. The LYRIC Theater in Spearman is one of the city’s oldest continuously operating businesses.

Settlement History and Local Heritage Sites

Old Farwell was founded in 1886 as the proposed county seat of Hansford County, but lost the county seat election to the town of Hansford. The stones at Old Farwell come from the lining of a hand-dug, 200-foot-deep well that supplied the town with water. Old Farwell’s history can therefore be viewed from two perspectives: as an unsuccessful administrative plan and as a place with a tangible water supply. Cator Buffalo Camp became a trading post called Zulu. Hansford Cemetery was the first designated burial ground in the county. The Cator brothers, founders of Zulu Stockade, and the Wright brothers, early ranchers, are buried there.

Norwegian Heritage

The first settlers of the Oslo Community were recruited from established Norwegian colonies in the Midwestern United States. This origin connects the community’s history with Norwegian settlements far beyond Texas. Syttende Mai, Norway’s Independence Day, was celebrated annually on May 17 in the Oslo Community. The Olso Lutheran Church is now a testament to the region’s Norwegian heritage. Syttende Mai is part of the community’s historical tradition; the Hansford Roundup takes place in the county in May. Check the current Roundup dates before your trip.

Roads, Railways, and Hunting Plans

In 1920, the North Texas and Santa Fe Railway built a line from Shattuck, Oklahoma, to its new townsite, Spearman, in southeastern Hansford County. Paved State Highways 15 and 207 connect Hansford County with the rest of Texas. The railway and highways serve different roles: the line is part of Spearman’s settlement history, while the state highways provide guidance for road travel.
