Kenedy County: Coast, Lagoon and History
Accommodation in Kenedy County
Padre Island National Seashore protects a 65.5-mile (105-kilometer) stretch of Padre Island in parts of Kenedy, Kleberg and Willacy counties. For travelers, Kenedy County offers both a coastal landscape and historical points of interest in Sarita.
Coast, Dunes and Laguna Madre
On the Gulf of America-facing side of Padre Island National Seashore, there are more than 60 miles of sandy beach. The protected area’s landscape also includes wind-swept dunes, grasslands, tidal flats and warm coastal waters. On the west side of Padre Island lies Laguna Madre: a shallow body of water and one of only six hypersaline lagoon or bay systems in the world. Its average depth is about 3.6 feet, or 1.1 meters.
Wildlife also shapes the character of the National Seashore. The area is considered globally important for migratory birds. Birdwatchers will find a clear connection with nature here; the coast, grasslands and tidal flats also show how varied the landscape is within the protected area.
Water Activities and Beach Driving
At Padre Island National Seashore, you can fish from the beach, Laguna Madre or a boat. Kayaking and canoeing are available in the salt water of Laguna Madre and the Gulf of America. Swimming and wading are allowed at North Beach, Malaquite Beach, South Beach and Bird Island Basin. Check local hazard advisories before swimming.
A beach drive along the wild coast of Padre Island provides access to Little Shell Beach, Big Shell Beach, Yarborough Pass and Mansfield Channel. Weather, tides and vehicle requirements can vary; check current park conditions before setting out. Bird Island Basin has the only boat ramp in Padre Island National Seashore. Check current conditions before launching from there as well.
Trails and Practical Information
The Grasslands Nature Trail is an easy walk through the coastal prairie. The fully paved loop is 0.75 miles, or 1.2 kilometers, long. This gives you a specific route to include in your visit for a shorter nature walk.
The Malaquite Visitor Center has an information desk, educational exhibits and a park store; the restrooms are open 24 hours a day. Check current opening hours before your trip. Beach wheelchairs and walkers are available to borrow free of charge at the visitor center. They are provided on a first-come, first-served basis and may only be used at Malaquite Beach.
Novillo Line Camp is one of the last remaining historic structures in Padre Island National Seashore. It preserves a bunkhouse, cattle pens, a table and a dining area associated with ranch workers and island residents. To reach the camp, park at a small pullout on Park Road 22 opposite Bird Island Basin Road, then walk along an unpaved path. Follow current park regulations and do not block the gate.
Sarita and the County’s History
In Sarita, the Kenedy Ranch Museum of South Texas presents the Kenedy family’s connections to ranching, railroads, land development and oil production. The following hours apply in 2026: Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. Hours may change, so check them before your visit.
On the grounds of the Kenedy County Courthouse in Sarita, a historic Kenedy County marker dating to 1936 stands at its original location. The marker records that the county was formed on April 2, 1921, from parts of Cameron, Willacy and Hidalgo counties and named after Mifflin Kenedy. The museum and marker thus offer different perspectives on history: the museum focuses on the family’s economic connections, while the marker records the county’s formation and naming.
Seasonal Nature Experiences
The Los Ranchos de Tejas Loop includes a section in Sarita with seasonal wetlands that may dry up during a drought. The Sarita section leads via Garcia Road to a marsh where black-crowned night herons nest. The route therefore connects the seasonal wetlands near Sarita with the marsh where black-crowned night herons nest.
Recurring seasonal experiences at the National Seashore include several free, public hatchling sea turtle releases each year. Most take place between May and August, usually at daybreak; dates vary. Check in advance using the hotline or the National Park Service’s current release page.
