Aviation history, historic architectural styles, local history and nature offer different points of interest for a trip to Nolan. If you are looking for a hotel, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your stay: are you most interested in the history of the WASP, in buildings and their functions, or in the Lake Sweetwater Recreation Area? These different themes can help you identify your interests and tailor your search for hotels in Nolan accordingly.

WASP History and Avenger Field

On February 21, 1943, WASP training was moved to Avenger Field, three miles west of Sweetwater. Avenger Field is Sweetwater’s local airport in Nolan County. The date places the move within a specific period of history; the location indicates where the field is in relation to Sweetwater.

The grounds of the National WASP WWII Museum include Hangar 2, an original building dating from 1929, and a replica of Hangar 1, which the WASP used at Avenger Field. The original and the replica offer different architectural points of interest. Together with the history of the training, they offer two perspectives on the WASP: their historical connection to Avenger Field and the architectural legacy on the museum grounds.

Museums and Architectural History

The Pioneer City County Museum is housed in a historic residence and serves the residents of Sweetwater and Nolan County, Texas. It is located in the Ragland House, built in 1906. The museum’s purpose and the history of the house are therefore closely connected: the building is not just the museum’s location, but also a historic residence with a specific year of construction.

Various architectural features offer further points of interest. The Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium was built in 1926 and designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. The Trammell House features both Mission Revival and Prairie School elements, as well as a unique atrium. From 1923 to 1936, it served as the only hospital in the area. The Davis House, meanwhile, is notable for a transition in style: it represents the shift from a Craftsman-style bungalow to a Colonial Revival-style building. The three examples thus differ in their respective styles, features and functions.

Local History and Remembrance

Sweetwater Cemetery includes the graves of pioneers, immigrants, community leaders and American Civil War veterans. These groups offer several historical perspectives: from early settlement to immigration and community life, and the remembrance of war veterans. Those interested in local history can therefore consider this place as a distinct area of interest.

The First National Bank Building is listed as having state significance in the areas of commerce and architecture. This brings into focus a building associated with economic and architectural history, alongside the residences and the auditorium. Comparing it with the other buildings mentioned highlights different aspects: architectural design, former use and the significance of commerce.

Recreation and Events

The Lake Sweetwater Recreation Area covers approximately 950 acres and combines recreation, relaxation and natural beauty. The acreage gives a concrete sense of the size of this recreation area. Unlike the buildings described above, the area itself is the main focus here. If you would like to include nature and recreation in your travel plans, you can consider this alongside architectural and local history.

The APPLAUSE Series offers a distinct focus as well: it includes concerts and art exhibitions. The event formats mentioned therefore include both music and visual art. When choosing a hotel in Nolan, you can consider whether you would rather focus your trip on history and architecture, recreation or these cultural themes.
