Sweetwater, Texas, offers a variety of reasons to visit: historic sites, exhibitions and performing arts, as well as an annual event and activities on the water. To help plan your trip, start by deciding whether you are especially interested in history, an event program or spending time outdoors.

History at Specific Sites

The Pioneer City County Museum is located in the historic Ragland House, built in 1906. The building provides a tangible historical setting for a museum visit. The museum also includes a funeral chapel with permanent collections. The house and chapel offer different points of interest for visitors who would like to learn about Sweetwater’s local history during their stay.

Another site with a clear historical connection is the National WASP WWII Museum at Avenger Field in Sweetwater. Exhibits in Hangar 1 showcase the WASP’s leadership, training and life in Sweetwater. The visit therefore focuses not only on individual exhibits, but also on the WASP’s training and living conditions. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Hours may change on holidays or during special events; check the schedule before planning a visit for a specific time.

Downtown also offers its own connection to the area’s heritage: the historic business district includes more than 50 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Together with the Ragland House and the museum at Avenger Field, this offers a range of historic subjects and sites in Sweetwater.

Art, Performance and an Annual Event

The Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium is a performing arts venue with 750 seats. The APPLAUSE series includes concerts and art exhibitions. If you would like to plan your trip around a performance or exhibition, check the program and dates before arranging your stay.

Another place to see art is the Jo & Tom Henderson Gallery. It opened in 2018 and hosts several art exhibitions throughout the year. Together with the APPLAUSE series, it offers a focus on art in different formats: exhibitions at the gallery, as well as concerts and art exhibitions at the auditorium.

A special annual event is the Sweetwater Jaycee's World's Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up. The event began in 1958 and takes place every year on the second weekend of March at the Nolan County Coliseum in Sweetwater. As future schedules may vary, check the dates for the relevant year if you plan to visit around the Round-Up.

At Lake Sweetwater and Newman Park

Fishing and boating are available at Lake Sweetwater, which also has a boat ramp. If you are weighing these activities as you plan your trip, you can find opportunities for both fishing and boating here. The boat ramp is another specific feature of the lake.

Newman Park has a walking trail. This makes it easy to distinguish between the recreational activities mentioned: Lake Sweetwater offers fishing and boating, while Newman Park offers a trail for walking. Comparing the two can help you decide what to focus on during your visit without treating different activities as the same.

Plan Your Stay Around the Reason for Your Trip

The specific reason for your trip can help organize your plans for a stay in Sweetwater. If you are visiting for the Round-Up, the date for the relevant year is key; for a visit to the National WASP WWII Museum, the regular opening days are relevant. If you are not planning around a set event date, you can choose to focus on history, art or outdoor activities.
