Cuero brings together several perspectives on DeWitt County’s history: agricultural traditions, cowboy history and historic buildings in the city center. Museums explore a range of subjects and preserve insights into past uses and ways of life. This can help you plan your trip by deciding whether you’re most interested in collections, the history of individual buildings or the historic cityscape.

Museums and the History of Cattle Drives

The Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum preserves stories and memories of DeWitt County’s agricultural and cowboy history. Lassos, saddles and a chuck wagon illustrate the history of the great cattle drives. The Tinker Collection offers a broader perspective on three traditions: the cultures of Mexican vaqueros, South American gauchos and American cowboys. Visitors particularly interested in the differences and commonalities among these cultural connections will find a different focus here than in museums devoted to buildings and local collections.

The buildings that house museums also tell stories of their former uses. The Cuero Heritage Museum is housed in the former Cuero Federal Building, a former post office built in 1915. The Pharmacy and Medical Museum of Texas is located in an 1889 pharmacy building. Its original wall display cases and sales counter are preserved, as is the pharmacist’s workbench. In addition to their museum subjects, both places offer a tangible impression of how buildings were once used.

The DeWitt County Historical Museum is housed in the Bates-Sheppard Home. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and recognized as a Texas Historical Landmark. The grounds also include a two-room log cabin with a so-called dog run. Visitors can stroll through the old-fashioned garden. Here, the history of the house and its designations come together with features of the museum grounds and time spent in the garden.

Historic City Center and Buildings

Visitors can explore numerous historic homes, buildings, churches, museums and storefronts in Cuero’s historic city center. The range extends from individual buildings to a larger historic cityscape. Named sites include Grace Episcopal Church, recognized as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, and First Methodist Church, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Terrell-Reuss Streets Historic District and Macedonia Baptist Church are also listed on the register. These different designations help visitors understand the city’s historic landmarks, from individual buildings to an entire district.

Recreation and Seasonal Events

The golf course in Cuero is open Tuesday through Sunday. It is closed on Mondays except for members; hours are extended during the summer. Since operating hours can change seasonally, check them before planning your visit. Cuero’s Christmas in the Park is a Christmas drive-through light display at Cuero Municipal Park. The features described include hundreds of handmade scenes, a nativity scene by the lake and thousands of lights. Since display details can change from season to season, it’s a good idea to check the information before planning a drive-through visit.

Cuero Turkeyfest features both market and cooking demonstrations and Saturday events. The arts and crafts market is complemented by Dutch oven cooking and camp cooking demonstrations, where fresh biscuits and cobbler are offered. Saturday events include the Turkey Trot 5K, the Great Gobbler Gallop and the Turkeyfest Parade. Since the festival program may change, check in advance what is planned for the event that year.

DeWitt County as a Regional Context

Beyond Cuero, DeWitt County offers its own perspective on the region’s landscape: more than 1,000 different species of flowering wildflowers have been documented there at various times. Seasonal conditions for wildflower viewing vary. The Cuero Chamber of Commerce, Agriculture & Visitor Bureau provides wildflower identification brochures and maps for scenic drives through DeWitt County. Since the availability of these materials can change, check directly with the office before planning your trip.
