Rolling prairies and rugged river bluffs give Wheeler County a varied landscape. Sweetwater Creek originates in the county and is fed by springs. The region is also shaped by the history of Route 66: U.S. Highway 66 was built through the southern part of the county in 1916, and Wheeler County has access to the historic route. Wheeler and Shamrock are the communities that particularly shape its character.

Route 66 and Architecture in Shamrock

Shamrock is home to the Tower Station and U-Drop Inn Café, a distinctive landmark in Route 66 history. The building was constructed in 1936 with Art Deco details and two towers. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The restored U-Drop Inn welcomes visitors and now serves as a visitor center, Chamber of Commerce office, and community center. Its varied present-day uses make the site interesting not only for its architecture: a historic building and several community functions come together here.

Shamrock is described as the first Route 66 town in Texas when approaching from the east. The Pioneer West Museum complex is also one of the town’s cultural attractions: it includes the restored Magnolia Station, and the Zeigler House is also part of the complex. Those interested in the built history along the route can consider these sites alongside the Tower Station and U-Drop Inn, without conflating the different buildings into a single museum.

The Shamrock Water Tower is visible from about ten miles away in every direction and is considered a landmark of engineering and tourism. According to the company records on which this historical designation is based, it was the tallest tank of its class ever built by the Chicago Bridge and Iron Company. It also remains one of the tallest water towers in Texas. Its visibility, engineering significance, and Route 66 buildings offer different ways to explore Shamrock’s history.

Mobeetie and Wheeler: County History

Mobeetie offers a glimpse into the early administrative and town history of Wheeler County. Old Mobeetie is considered the oldest town in the Texas Panhandle and was Wheeler County’s first county seat. The first courthouse in the Texas Panhandle was built in Mobeetie in 1880. A later development in this history followed in 1908, when Wheeler County’s wooden courthouse was moved to Wheeler.

The Old Mobeetie Jail was built in 1886 from locally quarried limestone. Today, the Old Mobeetie Jail Museum serves public education and the preservation of regional artifacts; items on display there also include gallows. The Wheeler Historical Museum is dedicated to preserving the county’s history. Its Alan Bean exhibit features several personal artifacts belonging to Alan Bean; it also includes a nine-foot-tall bronze statue depicting Captain Bean in a spacesuit. The two museums have different focuses: in Mobeetie, the historic jail and regional artifacts take center stage, while in Wheeler, the focus is on county history and the Alan Bean exhibit.
