Route 66 heritage, musical history, and regional art offer different cultural perspectives on Gray. In Pampa, a museum and public art tell the story of the county and Woody Guthrie; in McLean, historic sites preserve a glimpse of the Route 66 era. There are also trails, an aquatic center, and recreation at Lake McClellan. You can plan your stay around the topics that interest you most.

Museums and Musical History

The White Deer Land Museum is housed in a restored 1916 office building of the White Deer Land Company. It presents the history of Gray County. The Red River War Wing focuses on the conflict between Native Americans and the United States government. The exhibit presents both sides and features artifacts from battlefields and early military posts. The museum provides a tangible way to explore regional history and how this conflict is presented.

The Woody Guthrie Folk Music Center is housed in the former Harris Drug Store, where Woody Guthrie worked and found his first guitar. The center is a live music venue and aims to offer a community concert about once a month. At the Friday jam sessions from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m., visitors can play along, sing, or listen. Since program details may change, it is a good idea to check the latest schedule before visiting.

Architecture and Route 66 Heritage

Pampa’s historic buildings include City Hall, a Beaux-Arts-style building listed as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. It was completed in December 1930 and features triumphal-arch entrances with classical detailing. The Gray County Courthouse also combines the Beaux-Arts style with Georgian ornamentation; it was dedicated on April 19, 1930. The Combs-Worley Building displays Art Deco influences and is part of Pampa’s “million dollar row.”

Streets in the McLean Commercial Historic District preserve a look reminiscent of the mid-20th century. The district is a historic Route 66 time capsule. McLean’s restored first Texas Phillips Petroleum gas station is another distinctive part of this heritage: its Tudor Revival design is worth seeing. The Devil’s Rope Museum brings history to life with exhibits about barbed wire, the Dust Bowl era, and Route 66.

Art and Trails in Pampa

The Art History Wall is made up of marble fragments, student tiles, and mosaics. Its themes range from Native Americans to agriculture, the oil industry, and the World War II military airfield. Near the MK Brown, the sculpture “This Land is Your Land” represents the refrain of Woody Guthrie’s song: the steel structure is 150 feet long and 10 feet high.

The Pampa Hike-N-Bike Trail includes Central Park, an outdoor amphitheater, and miles of trails. If you would rather plan a water activity, the Pampa Aquatic Center has a lazy river, a funnel slide, and a lap pool. Operations may vary seasonally; check the current hours in advance.

Recreation at Lake McClellan

The Lake McClellan recreation area has 60 campsites, including some with full hookups, as well as 25 picnic sites. Camping and picnicking offer a different focus from museums and architecture. Since facilities and lake conditions may change, it is worth checking current conditions before your visit.
