Mills County: Courthouse, Museum, and Experiences
Accommodation in Mills County
The Mills County Courthouse offers a concrete glimpse into the county’s history. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000 and designated a State Antiquities Landmark and a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 2002. Its construction history is also clear: the present building was built in 1913 in the Classical Revival style. It has three stories and a basement.
Architecture and Regional History
Restoration of the courtroom uncovered plaster coffers, ornate pilasters, and seating in a gallery. These details add specific insight into the interior design to the impression of a stately building. The Courthouse’s designations provide a historical context: they date to 2000 and 2002 and apply to the building itself.
Another chapter in the county’s history is presented by the Palmer Building, home to the Mills County Historical Museum. The building was constructed as a single-story structure in 1893 and received a second story in 1906. The museum’s exhibits range from early communications, a post office, and a bank to a farm, schools, jails, a general store, and a drugstore. Together, these displays showcase different institutions and aspects of everyday life in the past, rather than focusing solely on architecture.
Museum and Memorial Sites
Built in 1888, the Mills County Jail on Courthouse Square is the oldest government building in Goldthwaite and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its date and location on Courthouse Square connect the jail to another historic site. Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery adds another perspective: it connects visitors with regional history and includes memorials to veterans buried there.
Market, Events, and Garden
McMahan City Park hosts the official State Championship BBQ and Goat Cook-off. The event takes place annually in late April; dates may vary. If you plan to time your trip around it, check the dates in advance. The Goldthwaite Area Farmers Market follows a different, regular weekly schedule: it takes place on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon at Goldthwaite City Park. You should also check this schedule before your arrival.
The Texas Botanical Gardens is located within Legacy Plaza in Goldthwaite. Its offerings include educational programs for children and adults, including presentations and interactive experiences on site, as well as off-site field trips. Since programs may change, it’s worth checking the current offerings if a particular format is important to your plans.
Golf and Practical Information
The Goldthwaite Municipal Golf Course has nine holes, each with two sets of tees. This makes it possible to play a full 18-hole round. The course is located next to Goldthwaite Airport T-37 and is promoted for golf trips by air. This describes the special connection between the golf course and the airport without implying that any particular flight or golf operations are available.
The airport is about 2.5 miles south of Goldthwaite. Its runway is 3,200 feet long; the airport is intended for daylight operations only. Since operational details may change, check them before your trip. For local information, the Goldthwaite Welcome Center offers information on nearby attractions, businesses, and events and is open seven days a week. Here, too, it’s a good idea to confirm opening hours before visiting.
