Discover Bee County: History, Art and Nature
Accommodation in Bee County
Bee County offers historic architecture, art, nature and recurring events. When planning your trip, you can give these themes different emphasis: focus on buildings and history, experience the rural landscape in spring, or plan your stay around event dates.
Architecture and History
The Bee County Courthouse is an outstanding example of Classical Revival architecture. A large portico and Corinthian columns define the building. During its restoration, the brick-covered dome was repaired, and the roof received a replica of the original decorative balustrade. Its stylistic features and restoration details give the courthouse its own architectural history.
Beeville is home to the McClanahan House, the oldest commercial building in town. It was built around 1867. The Blanconia Church is also part of the region’s history: it is one of the oldest Baptist churches in South Texas. Both buildings offer a different perspective on history than the courthouse’s grand architecture.
Art and Cultural Insights
The Beeville Art Museum was founded by the Joe Barnhart Foundation and is housed in a historic Victorian-style home built in 1910. The “Bees of Bee County” project currently features 30 individually designed bee sculptures, distributed throughout Bee County. At Coastal Bend College, one of only two fully operational public glassblowing studios in Texas offers a distinctive cultural facet of the area.
The Simon Michael Art Gallery at Coastal Bend College regularly presents rotating exhibitions, including works by many local artists. Those interested in different forms of artistic expression will find a different focus here than in the history of architecture or the sculptures from the Bee County project. The Joe Barnhart Bee County Library offers educational programs year-round, adding an educational dimension to the cultural offerings.
Landscape, Wildlife and Recreation
In rural Bee County, wildflowers bloom spectacularly in spring. Birdwatching opportunities include species such as Green Jays and Painted Buntings. While birdwatching in Bee County, you can look out for Green Jays and Painted Buntings, among other species.
In Beeville, Flournoy Park has a skate park and a children’s area with swings and a slide. The Coastal Bend College Exercise Track is a scenic 1.5-mile trail surrounded by Texas wildlife.
Events and Local Gathering Places
The Texas Mile takes place twice a year, in March and October, at the Chase Field Industrial Complex. The Downtown Vendor Markets in Beeville follow a different schedule: they take place every fourth Saturday and feature local vendors and crafts. If you want to plan your stay around an event, check the specific dates when making your plans.
The Bee County Exposition Center has a covered arena, an auditorium with a large wooden dance floor, a covered outdoor pavilion, horse stalls and RV parking spaces. Coastal Bend Distillery has a tasting room with live music, events and games. La Linea Wine Bar offers wines from Texas, California and beyond. Alongside architecture, nature and art, event venues and a variety of wine offerings are also worth exploring.
There are several concrete options to consider when choosing your travel dates: spring for the wildflowers, March or October for the Texas Mile, and the fourth Saturday for the Downtown Vendor Markets. Which of these guides your plans depends on whether the landscape, culture or an event date is your priority.
