Kleberg: Water Sports, Nature and Ranch History
Accommodation in Kleberg
Kleberg combines nature experiences, water sports and ranch history. Padre Island National Seashore extends through parts of Kleberg County; boating, fishing and the protected area are among the visitor attractions in Kleberg County. When choosing a hotel, it may help to decide in advance whether water activities, nature watching or ranch and regional history should shape your stay.
Water, Nature and Activities
Bird Island Basin offers kayaking and windsurfing lessons, as well as equipment rentals for both activities. The Bird Island Basin Boat Ramp is the only developed boat ramp in Padre Island National Seashore. This puts a range of water activities and a designated boat ramp alongside one another as distinct aspects of trip planning.
The Grasslands Nature Trail near the entrance station to Padre Island National Seashore is an approximately three-quarter-mile, wheelchair-accessible loop. Trail conditions can change, so check them before your visit. Kleberg County’s Kaufer-Hubert Memorial Park also has a public fishing pier that is 500 feet long. Options range from lessons on the water to a loop trail and fishing from a public pier.
Ranchland and Living History
King Ranch is designated a National Historic Landmark. Its guided tours, offered daily, take visitors through the ranch landscape and to historic and still-operating facilities. They pass Mrs. King’s carriage house and the Commissary with its observation tower. Tour schedules can change, so it is a good idea to check the details before your visit.
King Ranch’s birding and wildlife tours through wetlands and grasslands offer a different perspective on the landscape. While the guided ranch tours connect historic and still-operating facilities, these tours focus on the different habitats.
The King Ranch Museum also presents different aspects of ranch history. Its permanent collections include ranch photographs, saddles, firearms, flags, carriages and classic cars. There is also an exhibit on the history of King Ranch Quarter Horses; exhibit details may change. The annual Annual Ranch Hand Breakfast includes a cowboy breakfast served outdoors and a demonstration of traditional Cow Camp-style cooking. Check event dates for your travel period.
Museums, Buildings and Craftsmanship
The John E. Conner Museum presents permanent and changing exhibits about South Texas. The construction history of the Kingsville Railroad Depot is well documented: it was built in 1904 from locally made adobe bricks and has been listed as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark since 1974.
The Kleberg County Courthouse brings together several distinctive architectural features: Doric pilasters, a vaulted dome and irregular ashlar limestone masonry. Its pavilions recall Greek porticoes. The King Ranch Saddle Shop still uses the same decorative craft technique once used to make equipment for King Ranch vaqueros. Kleberg’s cultural history thus includes not only museums and historic buildings but also a continuing craft technique.
