Austin County: Landscapes, History, and Regional Experiences
Accommodation in Austin County
Austin County is about an hour west of Houston. Rolling hills, expansive pastures, grazing cattle, and blooming bluebonnets shape the landscape. Winding two-lane roads pass through agricultural land and fields of wildflowers in bloom. The county’s rural character is complemented by a range of distinctive places to experience culture and nature.
Landscapes and Trails
Stephen F. Austin State Park encompasses 473 acres of bottomland forest, hardwood forest, and ash swamp. Its trails offer opportunities for hiking and biking. The three landscape types give the park a varied natural character: forest and swamp are both part of the scenery. The county’s roads also shape the experience of the landscape, winding through agricultural land and past wildflowers.
History and Architecture
San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site commemorates the place where Stephen F. Austin established the headquarters of his colony in Mexican Texas in 1823. Another side of the county’s history is on view at the Austin County Jail Museum, housed in the red-brick building of the County Jail, built in 1896 and used as the county jail for almost 100 years.
The Sealy Historical Park brings together relocated historic buildings, special exhibits, and railroad heritage related to the history of Sealy, Austin County, and Texas. The site connects different aspects of regional history rather than focusing on a single subject.
Turnverein Pavilion Gut Heil in Bellville is a twelve-sided, wood-frame hall measuring 80 feet in diameter. Generations of the local community have held celebrations and events there. These have included family reunions, weddings, and birthdays, as well as dances, meetings, and political events. The hall reflects both a distinctive architectural form and its longstanding role as a gathering place for community life.
The Cat Spring Agricultural Society Hall is in Austin County. It was built in 1902 to serve German and Czech families in the area. The design called for a twelve-sided hall with a large central support post intended to provide more room for dancing. Guardian Angel Catholic Church is a Painted Church completed in 1915, with intricately painted walls and columns and stained-glass windows. The church congregation was founded in 1892 by several Czech families who moved from Fayette County to an area about three miles southeast of Wallis. The church is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for private prayer.

Another longstanding Bellville tradition is the Austin County Fair, featuring rodeo events, entertainment, and carnival attractions. If you’d like to plan your stay around the fair, check the specific event dates.
In Sealy, Yellow Brick Road Winery serves locally made wine in a tasting room, along with live piano performances. A few miles east of Bellville, Huff Brewing Company operates a taproom serving German-style craft beer. Its offerings include a Munich Helles and an amber lager inspired by German beer. The two venues offer different experiences: one features wine and piano music, while the other focuses on German beer styles.
Newman's Castle features a moat, a working 3,000-pound drawbridge, a chapel, five round towers, a courtyard, and a central main tower. These many features give the site a distinctive architectural character. Those interested in unusual architectural forms will find another point of interest here alongside the county’s historic halls, churches, and railroad heritage.
