Rockwall County is bordered to the west by Lake Ray Hubbard. A rock wall that runs through the county and emerges above ground in some places gave it its name. History, historic buildings, and trails offer different perspectives on Rockwall and provide ideas for planning your stay around your interests.

History and Historic Sites

In the mid-1840s, the National Road of the Republic of Texas was surveyed and built through the area that would later become Rockwall County. This early connection to the region is complemented by places where history can be seen in the buildings and architectural styles.

The Rockwall County Historical Foundation Museum is located in Harry Myers Park in downtown Rockwall. The Hartman Windmill is also on the museum grounds. The Blackland Prairie Grassland, a conservation project for native grasses and wildflowers, is located there as well. Built around 1909 by hired laborers, the Bailey House was moved to the museum grounds in Harry Myers Park in 2017. Guided tours and self-guided visits are available during opening hours. Check current opening hours before your visit.

The Rockwall County Courthouse also makes its own architectural statement: it was built of limestone and features carved details in the modern style. In Royse City, the Zaner Robinson Historical Museum is on the first floor of a building constructed in 1925 and designated a Texas Historic Landmark. Old Jail Park includes a freestanding, one-room jail building known as a calaboose. It was built sometime between 1911 and 1921. The Royse City Main Street Program works to preserve the historic downtown’s character and strengthen its economic vitality.

Trails and Outdoor Activities

Rockwall has more than 20 miles of trails, including a mountain biking trail. One specific example is the Squabble Creek Mountain Bike Trail: the six-mile system consists of six trails. This trail is a clearly identified destination for planning a cycling outing; those who prefer to get around on foot can also find designated hiking trails in Royse City.

Royse City’s parks include about 45 acres of developed parkland and 1.5 miles of nature trails and jogging paths. The City Lake Park Trail and the Walker-Hawk Trail are the city’s two official hiking trails. The trail information thus describes different options, from a mountain biking system to nature trails and jogging paths. City trail details may change; check the latest information before setting out.

Waterfront Views and Wine Tasting

The Harbor District offers waterfront restaurants with panoramic lake views. In Rockwall County, Paws 4 Wine offers a dog-friendly boutique wine-tasting experience. As offerings may change, check the latest information before visiting. Along with historic sites and trails, you can also enjoy a meal by the water or a wine tasting during your stay.
