Williamson County combines expansive parks with rivers, recreational activities and historic sites. When planning your trip, it makes a difference whether you want to spend time by the water, explore longer trails or focus on culture and history. Excursion options range from natural areas to guided visits that require reservations.

Parks, Trails and Water

Five county parks offer a total of 15.27 miles of hiking, biking and running trails. One particularly expansive area is River Ranch County Park, with 1,354 acres of meadows, forests, hills and cliffs. The South Fork of the San Gabriel River flows through the northeastern part of the park. There are 20 miles of trails for hiking and horseback riding.

The approximately 4,800-square-foot Interpretive Center at River Ranch County Park combines interactive, hands-on exhibits with a library. This makes it easy to add a visit to the center to your time in the park. The trail information there describes a network for hiking and horseback riding; by contrast, the San Gabriel River Trail is a single, challenging 26-mile trail around Georgetown Lake that is open to hikers and cyclists.

Activities at Lake Georgetown include fishing, camping, water sports and swimming in shallow water. Jim Hogg Park has 142 reservable campsites and provides access to Georgetown Lake for boating via a boat ramp. Campsite availability may change. If you’re planning a boating excursion, you can consider this separately from the trails and land-based activities.

Blue Hole offers a different kind of river landscape: this scenic lagoon on the South Fork of the San Gabriel River is lined with wooded limestone cliffs. Inner Space Cavern offers a distinct experience; it is one of the best-preserved caves in Texas. The two destinations offer different kinds of nature experiences, rather than the same type of excursion.

Recreation and Seasonal Planning

Old Settlers Park covers 670 acres and offers disc golf, cricket, and facilities for baseball, softball and soccer. An approximately 3.3-mile paved trail connects Dell Diamond, sports facilities, pavilions, playgrounds, the lake and the disc golf parking lot. There is also a professionally designed 18-hole course, where open play is available seven days a week.

You can ride the Cedar Rock Railroad miniature train at Southwest Williamson County Regional Park. The Quarry Splash Pad operates from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Check its seasonal operating schedule before your visit if the splash pad is part of your plans.

Discover History and Culture

The Austin Steam Train Association’s Hill Country Flyer departs from Cedar Park Depot. The round trip covers 66 miles, crosses the South San Gabriel River and passes through Short Creek Canyon. Since schedules may change, check the timetable before your visit.

In Georgetown, the self-guided Downtown Walking Tour takes you past preserved historic buildings on the Square and on nearby streets. The Palace Theatre was built in 1925; Grace Heritage Center is a former Episcopal church dating from 1881. Georgetown Art Center offers monthly art classes and workshops for adults and teens. The program may change.

The Williamson Museum is free to visit; since admission policies may change, check the terms before your visit. Archaeology enthusiasts can find one of the largest known Clovis sites at the Gault Site, as well as deposits dating from before the Clovis culture. Access is by advance reservation only. Tours last about two hours; check access arrangements and tour format before your trip.

If you’re looking for a hotel, first decide which experiences will shape your trip: park trails and water, recreational activities or historic sightseeing.
