For a stay in Royse City, there are two main areas to explore: parks with ponds, playgrounds, and trails, and local history centered around the museum, calaboose, and Main Street. Plan your visit based on whether you’d like to focus more on spending time outdoors or exploring historical sites.

Parks and Trails

Royse City’s park system includes about 45 acres of developed parkland, four playgrounds, three catch-and-release fishing ponds, and 1.5 miles of nature and jogging trails. The city’s parkland thus includes both fishing ponds and trails for walking and jogging.

City Lake Park was established in 2014 and covers about 13 acres. Its four-acre lake is designated for catch-and-release fishing; a playground and fishing pier round out the amenities. The figure of about 45 acres refers to the park system, about 13 acres to City Lake Park, and four acres to its lake.

Splash Park has a pavilion, a grill, a small playground, and a catch-and-release fishing pond. Amenities at individual parks may change, so it’s a good idea to check current information before visiting.

Local History: Museum, Calaboose, and Main Street

The Zaner Robison Historical Museum depicts life on the Blackland Prairie from the first settlers through the boom years of 1920 to the 1960s. The museum is housed in a building dating from 1925. The building is recognized as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum’s subject and the building’s history offer different time perspectives: the exhibit spans a longer period in the history of the Blackland Prairie, while the building has a specific construction date of 1925.

Old Jail Park is downtown, by the water tower. Royse City’s calaboose is located in the park between the water tower and the railroad tracks. It is a freestanding, one-room jail built between 1911 and 1921. Here, the term “calaboose” refers to a single jail building, not a larger complex.

Main Street is also part of the city’s history: the Bankhead Highway became Royse City’s Main Street, and the downtown business district developed along it. The historic Main Street corridor offers distinctive shops and restaurants; individual businesses change over time. A comparison with a photograph taken in the 1920s also shows that most of the downtown buildings visible in it are still standing and in use.

Trails and Event Planning

Old Mill Park can be reached via Old Greenville or via the walking and jogging trail at Walker Hawk Sports Complex. The park has a catch-and-release fishing pond; its walking and jogging trail connects to the trail at Walker Hawk Sports Complex. The complex has two baseball fields and two softball fields. Field availability depends on contracts and reservations.

Music on Main takes place at Cookston Court every Friday evening from mid-April through September. Check the specific event date before making plans.
