Rockwall: Culture, Trails and Recreation
Accommodation in Rockwall
Rockwall offers a range of options for your stay: trails and outdoor activities, historic buildings, and theater and market offerings. You can organize these topics around your preferred interests when planning your trip. Be sure to check current dates for seasonal programs.
Trails and Outdoor Activities
Rockwall has more than 20 miles of trails, including park trails, street trails, neighborhood trails and a mountain bike trail. The Squabble Creek Mountain Bike Trail comprises six individual trails spanning a total of six miles. If you’re interested in this trail, check the current trail conditions before your ride.
The Harry Myers Disc Golf Course 2.0 also offers several layouts. Phelps Lake Park has a kayak launch that provides access to the water, as well as a fishing pier. Check the current park information before your trip if you plan to use these facilities.
History and Architecture
The Rockwall County Historical Foundation Museum is located in Harry Myers Park in downtown. The Bailey House was built around 1909 using paid labor. Another house on the museum grounds tells a different story of construction and use: the Manson-LaMoreaux-Hartman House was originally a two-room dogtrot house built by Watson B Bowles. In the 1980s, it was moved to the museum grounds for use as a museum.
The museum grounds also feature a reconstructed segment of the rock wall. It was moved from its original location and rebuilt there. The rock formations at their original location, by contrast, are on private property and are not accessible. Also associated with the museum is the Blackland Prairie Grassland, a conservation project featuring native grasses and wildflowers.
The historic Rockwall County Courthouse stands downtown. Built in 1941, it features Art Deco elements. For a night at the theater, the Rockwall Community Playhouse is another cultural destination: it is east of downtown, has 84 seats and produces seven shows per season. Since the seasonal program may change, check the current schedule before making plans.
Market and Waterfront Recreation
The Rockwall Farmers Market offers fresh produce and specialties such as grass-fed meat, artisan baked goods, seafood, honey, jams, pasta and tamales. There is live music on every market day. Since seasonal schedules and programming may change, check the current market days before your trip.
The Harbor in Rockwall features a lakeside promenade, a park and an amphitheater. If you plan to attend an event there, check the current schedule, as individual venues and programs may change. This helps you distinguish permanent recreational destinations from seasonal cultural offerings when planning your trip.
