Mount Pleasant brings together several distinct interests, ranging from the history of Snee Farm plantation to maritime exhibits, cultural presentations, and sites along the Cooper River. When planning, it is also worth considering the format of each visit. Options range from self-guided access and guided tours to live presentations; festivals provide an additional, time-specific reason to visit. This makes it easy to organize history, culture, and Memorial Waterfront Park around your own interests.

History Around Snee Farm

The Charles Pinckney National Historic Site is a 28-acre remnant of Charles Pinckney’s original 715-acre 18th-century plantation, known as Snee Farm. Comparing the preserved portion with the original property helps put the plantation’s scale into perspective. The site includes an 800-meter walking trail with the archaeological site of an enslaved community. This site adds another specific historical point of reference to the plantation’s history.

Culture and Architecture at Boone Hall

The offerings at Boone Hall vary in their access and subject matter. General admission includes access to the Avenue Of Oaks. A guided tour of the mansion’s first floor would provide a look inside Georgian-style rooms featuring repurposed materials and antique furnishings. Boone Hall also offers the live presentation “Exploring The Gullah Culture” about the unique Gullah culture developed by enslaved Africans. This places an inside look at the rooms alongside a presentation about a culture as distinct areas of interest. If you are interested in architecture, the guided tour is a specific place to start; the presentation focuses on Gullah culture.

Ships and the Vietnam Experience Exhibit

General admission includes self-guided access to the USS Yorktown, the USS Laffey, the Vietnam Experience Exhibit, and the Medal of Honor Museum. The Captain's Tour offers a different kind of access: it takes visitors through areas of the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown that are not open to the public. The Vietnam Experience Exhibit has its own distinct focus within this selection. The fully immersive, 2.5-acre exhibit brings the history of the Vietnam War to life with the help of holograms. It is designed as a Brown Water Navy base and a U.S. Marine Corps artillery base during the 1968 Tet Offensive and Battle of Khe Sanh. The exhibit therefore combines its immersive design with a specific historical scenario.

Festivals, Crafts, and Memorial Waterfront Park

The Blessing of the Fleet & Seafood Festival celebrates Mount Pleasant’s local shrimping and fishing heritage. The 39th annual edition took place in 2026; its program included live music, a boat parade, and local seafood. If you are planning to attend the festival, check the dates for your chosen year. Since 2004, the Sweetgrass Festival has celebrated the art of sweetgrass basket weaving, which originated in Mount Pleasant. At the Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Pavilion in Memorial Waterfront Park, visitors can watch basket weavers at work and buy their creations.

The third phase of the Memorial Waterfront Park expansion officially opened on June 4, 2025. It includes a splash pad, an inclusive playground, basketball and pickleball courts, a covered pavilion, and expanded dog play areas. This mix includes play, sports, and gathering spaces, as well as areas for dogs. Memorial Waterfront Park also has a fishing pier that extends 1,250 feet over the Cooper River. The different facilities in the third phase sit alongside a fishing pier with a precisely stated length and location.
