Cultural History in Goose Creek

In Goose Creek stands the existing brick St. James Goose Creek Church, whose construction began around 1713. Its interior features include 18th-century pews, a curved pulpit, a lectern, and a Baroque-painted plaster reredos. The approximate date when construction began and the dated pews are two separate aspects of the church. The pulpit and lectern refer to different elements of the church interior, while the painted reredos adds a distinctive decorative feature. The church can thus be understood both through its early construction history and through details of its furnishings.

The Huguenot Church Marker in Goose Creek commemorates the French Huguenot settlement and church. It was erected in 1910 by the Huguenot Society of South Carolina. Unlike the existing brick church, the marker is a commemorative monument; its subject is the history of the Huguenot settlement. The two therefore represent different historical points of reference in Goose Creek: a church building on the one hand and a memorial on the other.

St. James Goose Creek Cemetery dates to around 1711. By comparison, construction of the existing church began around 1713. Both dates place the cemetery and church construction in a similar early period; they are approximate dates for two different places.

The Oaks Plantation in Goose Creek was established in 1678–1680 by Edward and Arthur Middleton. Around 1900, the house at Oaks Plantation was replaced by a half-timbered house with columns. The dates refer to two different historical periods: 1678–1680 is when the plantation was established, while around 1900 marks the later change of house. This clearly distinguishes the plantation’s early origins from the later alteration of the house.

Market and Event Spaces

The Coastal Carolina Flea Market has more than 1,000 covered and uncovered vendor stalls. The number may change. Offerings include local honey, fresh fruit and vegetables, jams, and baked goods; individual items may vary by vendor. If a particular product is important to you, check what is available before your visit. The range of goods gives an impression of the market’s variety, without assuming that any particular item will be available at every visit.

Exchange Hall includes the Blue Room and the Gold Room, which can be used for smaller events. If an event date is important to your trip, check in advance whether the desired room can be used for that specific event. The two named rooms provide a concrete starting point for planning smaller events.
