Folly Beach: Beaches, Surfing and Coastal Nature
Accommodation in Folly Beach
Visitors to Folly Beach have access to six miles of wide beaches; the area is also known for its consistent surfing waves. Natural areas, a pier and cultural and historical connections add to its coastal appeal. If you’re looking for a hotel in Folly Beach, you can start by considering whether beaches, surfing, nature or history will shape your stay.
Beaches and Coastal Scenery
At the northeastern end of Folly Island is the Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve. From there, you can enjoy views of the Morris Island Lighthouse. Alongside the wide beaches, one particular landscape feature stands out here: the view of the lighthouse from the preserve.
Another connection to nature can be found at Folly Beach County Park. Bird Key, an important nesting site for coastal birds, is visible from the western end of the park. The view of Bird Key offers a different connection to the coastal landscape from the lighthouse view: here, nesting birds rather than a structure take center stage. The coastal landscape thus offers two distinct points of interest: the Morris Island Lighthouse viewed from the preserve and the important nesting site of Bird Key viewed from the western end of Folly Beach County Park.
Surfing and Views from the Water
Folly Beach is known for its consistent surfing waves; people surf the especially good waves at The Washout year-round. The Edwin S. Taylor Folly Beach Fishing Pier offers a different perspective: it extends more than 1,049 feet into the Atlantic. Visitors use it for birdwatching and walking while enjoying sweeping views of Folly Beach. The two places suit different interests: surfing at The Washout or walking and birdwatching at the pier.
Beach Access and Activities
Folly Beach County Park provides access to the beach. From May through Labor Day, Charleston County Parks and Recreation provides lifeguards at West End County Park and along the beach from 2nd Street East to 3rd Street West. For planning purposes, the specific season dates and location are therefore important. If lifeguards are important for your visit, check the schedule in advance.
Another activity on the water is fishing at the end of the community dock in Folly River Park. The distinction is practical: at the county park, the focus is on beach access; at Folly River Park, it’s fishing from the dock.
Folly Beach History and Culture
George Gershwin composed the classical opera Porgy and Bess during his stay on Folly Beach Island. Thus, alongside beaches and water sports, music history is another part of Folly Beach’s story.
The Folly Beach Historical Society’s collection is also part of the local history. Some of it is on display at the museum in the Community Center on Center Street; exhibit details may change. If you plan to visit specifically for this, check the latest exhibit information in advance.
