Franklin County: Rend Lake, Trails and History
Accommodation in Franklin County
Franklin County combines the waterscape of Rend Lake with trails, recreation areas and historic museums. You can tailor your stay to suit different interests: time by the water, outdoor activities or insights into the region’s history.
Rend Lake and Outdoor Trails
Rend Lake has nearly 19,000 acres of water and 162 miles of shoreline. The lake has more than 21 miles of paved, multi-use trails for hiking and biking. Trail conditions can vary; take this into account when planning. Another way to experience the waterscape is by exploring the six water trails, each accessible via a boat ramp.
There are two public swimming areas: South Sandusky Beach and North Marcum Beach. Because seasonal conditions play a role, it is recommended that you check them before setting out. Another trail option is the Blackberry Nature Trail: the addition of the Pine Trail and Gobbler Trail loops extended it from 0.75 to 2 miles.
Recreation and Conservation Areas
The Wayne Fitzgerrell State Recreation Area covers 3,300 acres; three-quarters of its perimeter borders the shoreline of Rend Lake. The area offers opportunities for water sports, picnicking and hiking. If you’re considering a camping stay, there are 243 campsites with electrical hookups and sanitary facilities. Reservation terms may change and should be checked when planning.
The Rend Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area has 3,000 acres of impounded water in managed pools, primarily managed for waterfowl. About 5,000 acres of the area are managed as a waterfowl refuge. Fishing is possible for most of the year; the refuge area is closed during periods of waterfowl use. At the Jackie Branch Recreation Area, there is an ADA-accessible fishing pier and an ADA-accessible kayak launch.
Museums and Local History
The 1905 Franklin County Jail Museum was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. On display are mementos related to George Harrison’s first trip to the United States. The museum also contains the actual cells where Charlie Birger was held, as well as a replica of the gallows and rope used for his execution.
The Silkwood Inn was built in 1827 on the Shawneetown-Kaskaskia-St. Louis Trail. The Silkwood Inn Museum houses furnishings and artifacts from the 19th century. The West Franklin County Museum is located in an old school building. Its collection includes artifacts, mementos and hundreds of photographs depicting life and people in Franklin County’s early days. Confirm tour arrangements before visiting.
