Nature and outdoor activities
Lakeview Nature Area in Macomb covers 80 acres of prairie, wetland and woodland ecosystems. Spring Lake Park offers a different focus: it is home to 230-acre Spring Lake and has three mountain biking trails. Kayaks, canoes, paddleboards and pontoon boats are also available to rent there. These differences can help you plan your day: Lakeview Nature Area focuses on its three ecosystems, while Spring Lake Park centers on the lake and its water and biking activities.
If you’re interested in Macombopoly, players can download an app powered by eATLAS and explore the square on foot. This is a self-guided way to experience the square, distinct from visiting a natural area or viewing a work of art. When planning, you can choose between scenery, physical activity and an app-based exploration of the square.
Art and history
The McDonough County Courthouse was built in 1872 and features original details in stone, brick and walnut. Its construction date places the building in its historical context, while the preserved materials offer specific features for architecture enthusiasts to look for. Historic barns are also among McDonough County’s rural attractions. They are presented as a destination on a scenic drive. This brings together a single building with a specific construction date and rural heritage as a theme for a drive.
The University Art Gallery is the primary venue for original art exhibitions for the university and the Macomb community. Murals offer a different artistic focus: since 2018, at least one new mural has been unveiled each year in and around Macomb’s Historic Courthouse Square, giving rise to the Macomb Murals Tour. When planning your visit, you can distinguish between a gallery for original art and a mural project that has developed over several years.
