Marion County: Culture, History and Activities
Accommodation in Marion County
When planning a trip to Marion County, you can tailor your stay to specific cultural and recreational interests. Salem offers insights into the county’s history, historic sites, and outdoor activities. In Centralia, museums, architectural landmarks, and memorials can also be focal points.
Salem: County History and Historic Traces
In 1823, Salem was established as the county seat of the newly formed Marion County. The town developed along the Vincennes Trail as a stagecoach stop. These two aspects provide a concrete framework for the town’s history: its early role as an administrative center and the trail’s historic importance to travel.
The William Jennings Bryan Birthplace Museum in Salem was built in 1852. Items on display include photographs, newspaper clippings, awards, and life masks of William Jennings Bryan and his wife. There is also furniture owned by his parents, a flatiron, and fire tongs from his childhood home. Visits require a special appointment; check before you arrive to find out whether and when a visit is possible.
Centralia’s historic downtown can also be explored on foot. Buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries still stand there. Plaques beside the main entrances identify historically significant buildings along the sidewalk and provide specific points of interest for your walk.
Centralia: Carillon and Industrial History
The Centralia Carillon consists of 65 bells, stands 165 feet tall, and is considered the world’s seventh-largest bell tower. Free reservations were required for public tours. Check in advance whether a tour is available on your preferred date.
The Centralia Area Historical Museum presents the region’s railroad history through historic images, tools, and clothing; this includes a tour of an actual caboose. The collection also covers the history of mining and the disaster at Mine No. 5. Exhibits include blasting caps, lunch buckets, rescue equipment, and newspaper reports. The museum thus offers two distinct ways to explore the region’s industrial history.
Other historic sites are spread across Centralia: Bicentennial Park is home to a wooden water tower, one of only two surviving structures of its kind along the Canadian National Railroad route. In Fairview Park, steam locomotive 2500 commemorates railroad history. The park is also home to the Republic F-105 Thunderchief, the very aircraft assigned to Vietnam veteran Lt. Col. William “Bill” Pachura in Takhli. The Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star in Centralia is an Air Age Memorial dedicated to those who fought in all wars.
The Centralia Carnegie Library is one of the 106 original Carnegie libraries in Illinois and hosts numerous free public events each month. As programs may change, check the current schedule before your visit.
