Warren County: Ceramics, Art and Traditions
Accommodation in Warren County
Ceramics, visual art, museums and regional traditions offer a range of themes for a trip to Warren County. When looking for a hotel, it can help to decide in advance what you want to focus on during your stay: Would you like to learn about ceramics, view exhibitions, experience festival culture or find out more about agriculture? These different themes give you concrete starting points for planning.
Ceramics and Their Makers
The collection at the Stoneware Museum of Monmouth includes ceramics from the Monmouth Mining & Manufacturing Company (3M), Monmouth Pottery, Weir Pottery, Western Stoneware Company and Maple City Pottery. The museum also has a private collection of more than 1,200 regional ceramic objects spanning 150 years. The five manufacturers named here and the broad time span offer different starting points for exploring the history of ceramics and its products.
The museum has specific opening hours: The Stoneware Museum of Monmouth is open Saturdays from April through October, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., or by appointment. Check the opening hours before your arrival.
Art and Exhibitions
The Buchanan Center for the Arts is located in a historic building on the downtown square in Monmouth, Illinois. It has 2,400 square feet of exhibition space; this figure may change as a result of renovations. The center also includes a craft shop and a large studio for classes, meetings and other art-related and community events. Programs and facilities may change. If you plan to attend a class or event, check the current offerings.
The Len G. Everett Gallery offers another perspective on visual art: it is the main art exhibition venue on the Monmouth College campus. Together with the exhibition spaces and studio at the Buchanan Center, it offers a varied look at art presentations and community art activities.
Museums and Recurring Festivals
The Warren County Historical Museum includes an exhibition titled “The March of War.” This is separate from the Warren County History Museum, which hosts the Great Nicola Magic Festival annually. Festival dates and programming may change.
The Warren County Prime Beef Festival focuses on beef and agriculture in Warren County. The festival brings together community pride and all things beef for a week in Monmouth, Illinois. For generations, it has celebrated Warren County’s agriculture, businesses and traditions. Here, too, dates and programming change from year to year; the food offerings may also vary.
Landscape, Agriculture and Local History
LeSeur Nature Preserve covers 16.5 acres and was designed to serve the public as an educational and recreational area. Campbell Bridge has been preserved as a pedestrian bridge at Citizens Lake. Only electric trolling motors are permitted on the lake; gasoline-powered inboard and outboard motors are not allowed. As regulations may change, check them before making plans.
Educational Garden & Farm also offers a glimpse of agriculture: produce grown there is sold at local farmers’ markets and to restaurants in the surrounding area. Crops and sales locations may change; check in advance if you are interested in current places to buy the produce.
A further aspect of local history is aviation: Monmouth Municipal Airport is the oldest continuously operating airport in Illinois. Along with ceramics, art, museum history and agriculture, these interests can serve as starting points for planning your trip and looking for a hotel in Warren County.
