Grundy County offers travel ideas centered on protected prairie, birdlife, hiking trails and the Illinois and Michigan Canal. Places such as Morris and the Mazonia State Fish and Wildlife Area also offer a variety of nature and cultural experiences. If you’re planning a hotel stay, you can start by considering which of these themes you’d like to shape your trip: landscapes and birds, outdoor activities or canal history.

Prairie and Birdlife

More than half of Goose Lake Prairie in Grundy County is designated as a nature preserve and protected by law. The prairie provides important nesting habitat for endangered or threatened bird species, including the Henslow’s sparrow. Its protected status and bird habitat make Goose Lake Prairie especially appealing to travelers who want to include prairie nature and birdlife in their travel plans.

The Mazonia State Fish and Wildlife Area covers 1,017 acres in Grundy County. Visitors can fish from shore or by boat, subject to the site’s seasonal regulations. A day permit is required to collect fossils. Fossil collecting is restricted from March 1 through September 30. The site’s seasonal rules apply; check permit procedures with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources before your visit.

Hiking Trails and Other Outdoor Options

Goose Lake Prairie has a total of 7 miles of hiking trails. The Tall Grass Nature Trail runs through the prairie and is designed for self-guided exploration. The Prairie View Trail is described as a 3.5-mile, moderately difficult hike through prairie and farmland. The distances and stated difficulty level offer different points of reference when choosing a route. In winter, the trails at Goose Lake Prairie can also be used for cross-country skiing.

Hikers visit Gebhard Woods State Park to explore its trails. The park is bordered by the Illinois and Michigan Canal to the south and Nettle Creek to the north. These two named boundaries provide a clear sense of the landscape. The trails and places mentioned offer different ways to spend time outdoors: from exploring a prairie trail on your own to hiking or, in winter, cross-country skiing.

Canal Trails and History

The towpath along the Illinois and Michigan Canal is used for hiking and biking. The Illinois and Michigan Canal State Trail offers views of the canal and the Des Plaines and Illinois rivers along its 61.5 miles. The canal thus connects outdoor activity with a landscape in which the named rivers are also part of the view.

Gebhard Woods State Park is also home to the restored Nettle Creek stone aqueduct. It was originally built to carry the canal over Nettle Creek. In Morris, Morris Wide Water is a turning basin on the Illinois and Michigan Canal, on the eastern edge of the city in Grundy County. These places highlight different aspects of the canal: the aqueduct as a structure with an original function, and the turning basin as a named feature on the eastern edge of Morris.

William G. Stratton State Park in Morris offers public boat access to the Illinois River. The Grundy County Historical Society Museum has a collection that includes Civil War weapons, a one-room schoolhouse, cigar-box art, award-winning quilts, nationally known fossils and a turn-of-the-century store. So travel planning can include not only nature and activities, but also a historical collection of items and subjects from a wide range of areas.
